What's Wrong With Being PC? Consideration For Others Is Common Decency. It's Morality

And now 'socialist' is no longer a dirty word.

I think it backfired for conservatives. They were so worried about socialism that they talked about it so much they got people thinking about it more and more.

Then, along comes Bernie, and people began to take a fresh look at it and realize there is some merit to it. Socialism can be useful.

and the founders wrote some right into our constitution

Hello ThatOwlWoman,

LOL!

Too funny.

And the reason it is so funny is because it is so true.

I don't know.

I just try to think for myself and make sense of things.

I try to identify propaganda and avoid it.

I want to have a realistic view.

It makes no sense to hate. Holding grudges is like holding stress. And I certainly don't want to be stressing about people I don't really even know. Stress makes you old, causes disease. We get plenty of stress in life. We don't need to take on any more than already comes at you.

I like science and logic. Those are good ways to explain things, learn, understand how things are.

Logic tells us our nation was designed to have opposing views. It would be absurd to try to imagine the USA with only one approved point of view. That wouldn't be freedom. If you love freedom, you must, by association, love diversity. And that includes diversity of views. If you want to have your say, you must allow others to have their say, too.

It would be absurd to think that some views should/could be eliminated. That's laughable. People who say stupid things are not going to be silenced by shouting them down or insulting them.

The best way to counter corrosive views is to talk about them and reason why they may not be advisable. Offer a better idea.

And there is certainly no point in talking to people who will not listen.

Talking and communication are wonderful ways to convey ideas. But a conversation is only productive if both parties are contributing to a discussion. Some pretend to be willing to have a conversation; but they really just want to unload their frustration and hatred. It is not logical for the object of their hatred to comply with that one-sided kind of fake discussion. It's not really a discussion if one party is only pretending. A productive conversation requires a basic exchange of ideas pertaining to a subject. If person a) says we should have a certain policy and person b) replies with an insult about person a), it is illogical for person a) to expect any other response out of person b) in subsequent comments. This is why it is justified in a forum such as this to use the Ignore Feature.

By using this feature effectively, one can filter out the garbage posts; leaving only the posts of substance. I have personally adopted this method with great success.

Each person needs to ask themselves why they come here and what they expect to get out of it.

For me, I want to be well informed; and I like to understand what motivates others to adopt the views they have.

I come to talk about politics!

But it is clear that not all who are here share that view. Some come to try to push an agenda. They want to shout down everybody who holds different views. It's an impossible task. There's just too much activity.

Some just come here to unload. They've got their mind made up that (some group) is responsible for problems in our country, so they want to make them pay for that, make them feel bad, insult them. They hope they can cause shame, hope to drive off those who post opposing views by being nasty. Badness in the name of goodness, presumably. Which makes no sense on the face of it.

I view that as time-wasting. Our time is valuable. We only get so many days and hours to be alive before we die. Everybody dies. Logically (good old logic again) it makes no sense to spend some of your time talking to shallow people who are obsessed with trying to unload their frustrations on you. That detracts from the prime purpose of coming here to discuss politics.

The more time one spends engaging with shallow people the less time remains to engage with greater minds.

For our nation to be firing on all cylinders we need our best minds to be discussing the issues and brainstorming ideas for solutions to problems.

Sadly, some don't want solutions. They like things just the way they are. Those would be many of the ones who are currently getting very rich the way things are right now.

And isn't that the classic struggle between the rich and powerful on one side vs the masses and the poor on the other?

Hello Heff,

No, political correctness isn't common decency. It's an assault on language and free speech.

A good post, Heff. Thanks for bringing this. George could find a way to effectively argue nearly anything. But, of course, there is a time and a place for such entertainment.

Love George Carlin. He was a great entertainer. Very witty. Makes ya think. And he was at the forefront of opposing political correctness. But that was only because he made a living out of being politically incorrect. I only had to listen to the clip for one minute before hearing George say he wasn't sure if restricting and controlling people's language was the way to fight discrimination.

Being politically correct is a choice, not a restriction or a control.

Everyone is free to speak as they please.

And those hearing them are also free to think what they will about what is being said. They are free to draw whatever impressions they might from what was said.

Everybody knows George was trying to elicit a laugh. George got paid for saying things that some might think, but might not say.

Why wouldn't people just say anything that came into their minds?

Because if they do, they might hurt somebody's feelings.

Most people don't want to go around hurting others.

Most people don't want the stigma of being somebody who is insensitive to others.

That would be selfish.

The world is getting more and more crowded with humans. Since we won't do anything about it, it is becoming increasingly important to learn to get along well with others. That is usually an important requirement for working. It is often found on employee reviews. How well does the worker get along with other workers and customers? Selfish people who score poorly on this don't do well as workers. You wouldn't want somebody insensitive to be part of your customer service team. That would be a good way to drive off business. In this instance, being politically incorrect would wreck capitalism.

Selfish people who don't get along with others don't do well in society. Nobody wants to be treated insensitively by others. People like to be a functioning part of a team, group, or community. Somebody who says hurtful things about others causes dysfunction. That causes people to stop being productive and wonder about how this person could be so insensitive.

Being politically incorrect is not about not being able to express oneself. It is about understanding how to express oneself while still being considerate of others.
