'When John McCain was my captive'

Tran Trong Duyet - a sprightly retiree and amateur ballroom dancer - must rank as one of John McCain's more unlikely supporters.

Four decades ago, during the Vietnam war, Mr Duyet was in charge of the notorious Hoa Lo prison - the place where Mr McCain says he was brutally beaten and tortured during five-and-a-half years as an American prisoner of war.

"McCain is my friend," said 75-year-old Mr Duyet as he feeds the caged birds he now keeps in his garden in this coastal city.

"If I was American, I would vote for him."

McCain has since described enduring months of solitary confinement and systematic torture which drove him to try to kill himself.

"I don't know how he'd react if he met me again," said Mr Duyet, flicking through old black and white photographs of himself and his American prisoners at Hua Lo.

"But I can confirm to you that we never tortured him. We never tortured any prisoners."

Mr Duyet reminisces instead about how he often summoned the future US presidential candidate to his private office for informal chats.

Well there you have it.....glad thats all settled...I'm SURE you left-wing-nuts can find hundreds of Viet Nam vets to validate that confession of Mr. Duyet....ahh yes...informal chats over tea and cookies....of course...I never had any doubt..

Well Bush seems to like Vietnam, he ran around in Jammies over there with them.
I wonder if he went ballroom dancing while there ?

That's because McCain betrayed america, and cooperated with the commie north vietnamese. He's lying about being tortured.

It's because he is still paying back the Karma for the torture.

This is so fricking weak. The same people who were all on about people even talking about Kerry and Viet Nam in other than a whispered awe of his awesome greatness are now trashing a vet who was tortured.

Obama's worst nightmare... is if his supporters start getting their message out.

The same machine .. REPUBLICANS .. who created the stir about Kerry are the same ones who attacked McCain and first suggested that he was never tortured and his war record is a fairy-tale.

In other words, this came FROM YOUR SIDE OF THE FENCE.

Republican senator Thad Cochrane has openly said he trembles at the thought of an unstable McCain in the Oval Office with his finger on the nuclear trigger.

After 3 or 4 days of capture, McCain said, “I’ll give you military information if you will take me to the hospital." .. THOSE ARE HIS WORDS.

Two weeks into his stay at the Vietnamese hospital, the Hanoi press began quoting him. It was not ‘name rank and serial number, or kill me’. as specified by the military code of conduct. McCain divulged specific military information: he gave the name of the aircraft carrier on which he was based, the number of U.S. pilots that had been lost, the number of aircraft in his flight formation, as well as information about the location of rescue ships.

This is all documented and it's why his fellow POW's can't stand McCain and it's why this so-called "war hero" has had so much trouble from veterans.

It's also interesting to note that in spite of McCain's so-called hate of "gooks" .. there has been no one in American politics who has been a better friend of the North Vietnamese than John McCain .. didn't know that either?

Despite your bizzarro belief that McCain somehow deserves a pass and shouldn't be questioned .. the questions are already out there and they were put out there by REPUBLICANS.

The they did it too "defense" is a confession, not a defense.

This is total rubbish, and it is sad. It will always be sad. The more you attempt this, the more sad you look.

Again, Obama's greatest weakness will be his own supporters, it is why he wants to control the message so desperately.

This came from REPUBLICANS.
It came from that idiot who went after Kerry. Who apparently believes that only his service in Viet Nam was honorable, anybody else... well...

Pretending that it's all good because now it is the left hooking onto this guy's bandwagon is pretense and simply wrong. There is no value to Obama to attempt this, only negative. I hope, against all Obama's hopes, that your message gets out to his detriment.

You must be confused brother. I wasn't looking for, nor do I need a "defense" for questioning the record of someone who wants to be the president .. and it's a long ass way from "Obama's worst nightmare" when in fact, Bush and Rove attacked McCain with much more fury than Obama ever will.

This is McCain's worst nightmare and he doesn't want anybody looking at his military record.

McCain graduated in the bottom 1 percent of his Annapolis class .. distinguished only by his misdeeds and malfeasance, got special treatment in getting the most sought-after Navy assignment as an aircraft carrier pilot, crashed five planes and probably never should have been a pilot in the first place, single-handedly block legislation to investigate if there were more POW's left behind in Vietnam against the wishes of other Pows and their families and the families of those still missing .. a big plus for the Vietnamese government in getting normalized relations, then went on to stand up for the North Vietnamese government in getting those normalized relations against the wishes of other republicans like Bob Dornan.

No sir .. no defense or excuse required.

Again, total rubbish.

McCain will benefit from any attack made on his service. I believe that Kerry did as well. I think crap like this will always backfire.

Again. This is exactly why Obama's team wants to control the message. I don't think they'll be able to.
