when republicans started getting boners for putin

Conservatives harbor an odd admiration for Vladimir Putin

It is rather curious, given the American conservative movement’s long and dramatic history of anti-Communism and anti-Russian saber-rattling, that many leading voices on the right are speaking about Russian President Vladimir Putin with varying degrees of admiration.*
For some, it is just a matter of comparing Putin’s toughness with President Obama’s alleged weakness. Without suggesting any love for Putin, Republicans in Congress have asserted that Russia’s incursion into Ukraine would not have happened had Obama not been such a wimp in his dealings with Moscow.
This line has been pushed especially hard by the foreign policy Tweedledee and Tweedledum of the Senate GOP caucus, John McCain and Lindsey Graham. Florida Sen. Marco Rubio echoed that sentiment at the CPAC conference in Washington on Thursday.*

I was just about to post a thread asking the question, 'Where does Russian/Putin sympathy come from?'

Trump support almost always comes loaded with sympathy for Putin/Russia, and it's really a disturbing phenomena when Republicans have traditionally been skeptical of Russia (and justifiably so, based on the events of the past 10 years).

The real question is, why Russia? Why Putin? Russia is nothing more than a glorified gas-tank, with anti-Western values, a crumbling economy and a tin-pot KGB thug as a dictator. The economy is looted by oligarchs (the average Russian makes below minimum wage), freedom of speech is suppressed, gays have almost no rights (other than the right to be beaten by pro-Putin mobs). They have no exports other than oil.

People like anatta always push for a normalization of Russia but give absolute shit reasons to do so.

and then we find out right wing economists were working to destroy our democracy with the help of koch money

People started turning Putin into a sort of Russian Chuck Norris, but, that was mostly tongue-in-cheek, faux respect. The candidacy of Douchebag Donald is what really changed things.

Not believing left wing lies about "collusion" isn't the same as supporting Putin

Precisely. Is this where we tell the Democrats that the 80s called and want their policies back, or something?

Putin is no friend of the US, but the Democrats push for acts of war against Russia because of the Hillary supporters stupid, busted election narrative is just plain scary.

2014?

Maybe you Dems should try to figure out why the Russian people love Putin.

Citizens love a strong leader who carries a big stick.

Some citizens love a dictator. Trump looks and acts like Mussolini. He wants a corporate /military/plutocratic state. He somehow thinks he can control them. Truth is, nobody can.Trump neither understands or respects the constitution. He believes in rule by reality show host. Trump is old and out of shape. He will not be around when we deal with the messes he is creating.

The Russian billionaires are deeply involved in money laundering. Their tool was real estate. They used the Cyprus bank as a go between. Trumps cabinet pick Wilbur Ross was president of the bank, and so was Putin. Bannon says Mueller is going after money laundering which he says will take Jared and Ivanka down too. Bannon admits that they were into money laundering. With Russians using real estate . Can you see how Trump figured into it? This is the right explaining who trump is, not the left.
