IMO, politics and religion do not make people crazy. Crazy people are attracted to religion and/or politics as a means to legitimize their mental state, usually aggressive impulses.
Most mentally ill are not violent toward others. Many commit suicide. A few turn into homicidal maniacs like James Fields, David DePage, Nikolas Cruz and Payton Gendron.
It's odd that most are RWed, but I think that's more a sign of the times. In the 1960s, they were LW nutjobs striking against "the Man". Why?
