White House denies manufacturer's boast that First Lady carried their $5,950 bag

I'm really not joking here. I would like to know the answer to this simple question:

What made this purse important enough to deny?

What made this purse important enough to deny?

Did they actually hold a press conference or was it a case of someone ringing up the Whitehouse press office and asking a question?

Exactly. Which way did this go down?

As far as I can tell, somebody claimed that it was their $6000 purse, the White House "vehemently denies" that she ever bought such an expensive accessory but instead it was a $900 purse... Then the people who made the $6000 purse insisted it had to be theirs and now they say, "Well, I assumed something that must not be true...."

All this over a fricking purse. Was it a call that made them offer an official denial? What made this important? I can't figure out why people would care what purse she has or doesn't have.

My question to you remains the same .. why not deny it if it wasn't true.
What made it important enough that it needed an official denial? My question is more to "How did we get to this point?"

Who gives a rat turd what purse the First Lady carries?

I guess I don't get the whole idea of what purse she has is important in some way. And if my wife bought a $900 bag I'd pass out, she'd never waste money that way. I wouldn't deny her the purse, she just wouldn't do it.

You argument seems to be that the Obama's should have just said they paid $6000.00 for the purse when in fact they paid only $900.00 .. to avoid the distraction ... but would only create another.

This issue is silly .. but not because the Obama's denied it.

It is difficult for me to offer much of an opinion as our press (the tabloids) would have just made up the "vehement denial" bit and, to be honest, most of the rest of the 'story' as well.

Still, at least the bag got some limelight on a political message board, no doubt giving the lady contributors a welcome treat.

The right-wing, as demonstrated here, gives a rat's turd what the First Lady wears so they can use it to defend Palin .. as demonstrated here. The WH knows this as well as you do .. thus they denied it .. because it wasn't true.

That's how we got here.

You're blaming the Obama's for a story they did not create ... AND AGAIN, why should they support something that isn't true?

From all appearances, the White House was called about it and denied the claim. What is so odd about that? Why does the White House responding to something somehow make it important?

It's silliness and it distracts, yes. But who is making an issue of it? Not the White House. If you have a problem with it you should email Matt Drudge. He's the only reason this is being talked about.

Doubtless.

It boggles me that people care this much over a purse. I can't imagine somebody rushing up to the President to ask the all-important question of what expensive purse Michelle carried on any particular day, then rushing back to tell of their "vehement denial" that it was 'that' expensive purse, instead it was 'this' expensive purse...

I also wouldn't have created the thread and am finding all of this fascinating.

Matt Drudge just links to other people's news, in this case it was the NY Daily News who "caused" this by writing a story on the ever important workings of purses and their costs. Are you saying that Drudge got the NY Daily News to write it so he could link it up?

yet people who wonder how a purse could be so important post dozens of times about the unimportant purse.
Damn, I hope Palin does get traction. Otherwise the republicans are going to be as exciting as watching paint dry.

Anyone reckon we can make this stretch to 10 pages?
Shhhh!

That's what I was trying... I want to see how long it will go. Especially just answering the question of why a purse is important.

I'm sorry to all the serious posters... I'm trying to make this legless purse thing walk...

:D

Us Republicans can just post here about a purse and watch all the fun..and spinning..

so getting bored, I'd say no..:cof1:

I'll indulge you:

1) I don't see any quotes from the President. Fashion writers write about fashion, including what the First Lady wears. Company says X. Fashion writer calls White House press office who says Y. Company says no, X. Story. Fashion writer meets deadline in time for happy hour.

2) If Drudge didn't link to it we'd never have heard about it. Drudge is a catapult for the horseshit. In selecting which stories to prominently feature on his website (Michelle Obama's purse v. the CIA lied to Congress) he causes some stories become more "important" than others.
