When I was at Vanderbilt, I worked with an old electrician wiring heavy machinery in the ME Dept.

He did not use a volt-ohm meter to check for a hot line.

He used his thumb and first finger, even on 220 volt circuits. He had thick calluses on his hand.

Good for him my old man did the same thing and I have even seen him wet his fingers to make sure he had a good contact .
But when you work with 440 3 phase with over 2800 amps you don't mess around like that.
I had a friend cut a line that her journeymen said was dead , she got blown off the ladder and suffered server burns and had to have skin graphs and never went back to work again.
The power in our sub stations comes in at 2000K volts and 2800 amps , you just walk into the room and you can feel the power in the air, and you had better know what your doing or you could easily get killed.
