For starters while the Republicans have control, it's not by large numbers. And just as the right and left have House seats that are gerrymander and safe, thus allowing for the election of more extreme people, there are plenty of House seats in more competitive districts which will stop any potential extreme legislation. The same goes for the Senate where Republican Senators hold seats in purple states.
