Why Americans Are Paying More At the Pump

Turmoil abroad and rising costs at home means consumers will have to shell out more for gas this summer

Gas prices--already the highest they've ever been in January and February--shot up nearly 30 cents over the past month to a national average of about $3.70 per gallon, sparking worries that a steep increase in fuel costs could crimp consumer spending and hobble an economy that is just starting to show signs of life.

Unfortunately, those fears may be grounded, experts say. On top of typical seasonal increases in fuel prices, a host of other factors threaten to disrupt supply chains and make financial markets nervous, pushing up the price of crude oil, which determines the bulk of what Americans pay at the pump.

unlike 2008....the president is not mentioned once.

should obama being doing something to bring gas prices under control?

Should the forum rules be amended to prohibit off-topic posts in politics threads?Other forums have that rule. Maybe it would make our community more attractive to people interested in discussing politics.

LOL

the fact is dunceler....gas prices are an issue NOW. you keep wanting to bury the facts.....but you can't.

But you've gotta admit, your constant whining about how poor GW was mistreated by everyone so egregiously is an obsession...

lmao. must defend the liberal media. must defend.

dude. if you had an ounce of political integrity you would agree that the gas price issue under obama vs. bush has not been the same.

but you don't. because you're a far left wing hack. only an idiot would deny that the issue is different given the presidents.

Yurt - do you remember where Bush worked before politics?

Take your time. And you can take the Texas Rangers off of the list.

I blame Obama, he is a failure as a president.

Just a couple of questions, Yurt: (1) Do you think the President should be mentioned or that Bush was unfairly maligned in 2008? (2) Do you think Obama should do something to bring gas prices under control, and, if so, what specifically should he do?

we could have under $2 gas if he opened up drilling!
That said ban drilling The 200 Caribbu up north need that 1 1thousanth of a percentage of land to strut on.

Prove it...PROVE that in 2008 Bush was mentioned...in NEWS ARTICLES and NOT simply the overheated rhetoric of whiny Righties.

You quote ONE article...wanna bet there are HALF A DOZEN articles blaming Obama for this round of high gas prices?

the fact that Obuma delayed deepwater drilling a year longer than necessary and not opening up both coast are HUGE Reasons he is married to high gas prices.

While I think the whole 'he isn't getting blamed as much as Bush' thing is annoying... there is a lot he could do

1) Short term, release about 10% of our reserves... give some short term relief. We have ample supply in the reserves to survive a disruption due to Iran.

2) long term, open drilling in ANWR, off shore and everywhere else for oil and nat gas. That will hammer future price escalation expectations

3) long term, national initiative to convert transportation over to nat gas. It is the most viable of alt options right now and can be implemented country wide.

I asked Yurt because, notwithstanding his eleventy billion threads on this topic, I have no idea whether he thinks Bush was unfairly maligned or that Obama is unfairly getting a pass or he just thinks that, even though it's stupid and has no basis in reality, Obama should be blamed just because, in his view, Bush was blamed. And if he thinks Obama is unfairly getting a pass, he should explain why Obama is to blame and what he ought to do to lower gas prices.

As for your policy proposals, releasing our reserves in the absence of an actual supply disruption is stupid. The reserves shouldn't be released every Spring just because the president feels pressure because gas prices are rising and if you want people to use less gas, higher prices are a good thing.

It is interesting how quickly we forget. While gas prices did rise under Bush, when he handed the reigns over to Obama, the national average was under $2 per gallon.

In fact, on December 31, 2008 the national average per gallon was $1.619..

http://www.treehugger.com/corporate-responsibility/2008-us-gas-price-year-in-review.html

That particular year was an up/down year, it went high in the summer, but went down in the Winter, it stayed down below $2 until February of Obama's inaugural year and has never been that low since and doesn't appear as if it will ever get there again. Topper will have an orgasm over that, but most of us realize that Gasoline prices are inflationary to prices for everything...

Why do you insist upon creating a strawman every fucking time we discuss an issue? No one stated that the reserves should be released every spring.

Seriously, if you want to have discussions... leave out the straw men. Otherwise the discussions end.
