Why are Democrats so naïve about totalitarian regimes?

Remember: the American left embraced Joseph Stalin, Mao Zedong, Fidel Castro, Ho Chi Minh, Pol Pot, Robert Mugabe, Daniel Ortega, Nelson Mandela, Hugo Chávez, and
Nicolás Maduro.

Now they mourn Ali Hosseini Khamenei.

Seems like a pattern.
