Hello Grugore,
I love threads like this. Thanks for starting it, Grugore. And one of the things I appreciate the most, is the ability to discuss a sensitive subject without resorting to insults and profanity.
I do think you're wrong, though.
Don't even try to tell us they don't. Its a fact. I could give countless examples of liberals resorting to intimidation and violence in order to shut down someones free speech. So, don't even try to deny it happens. Just tell us why you hate free speech.
This is hopeless stereotyping. I am not going to tell you that liberals don't do this. Some of them do. All of them don't. It also needs to be mentioned in the same breath that conservatives do it, too. I clicked a 'Thank You' for guno's link, and domer76's point that President Trump seeks to limit free speech.
Thank you, guno, for this link:
"The research finds that children with low intelligence are more likely to hold prejudiced attitudes as adults."
I think prejudiced people are more likely to be conservative than liberal. The liberal world is more accepting of differences than conservatives. Liberals include more subgroups. Conservatives have more limited ranges of acceptability. Blacks, gays, Muslims, and immigrants are severely outnumbered among conservatives, yet almost universally accepted among liberals. Cannabis usage and sexual diversity (group sex, multiple partners, open relationships, etc) are more acceptable to liberals than to conservatives. Religious diversity is also more acceptable to liberals than conservatives. Atheists and less well known religions are more acceptable to liberals than conservatives.
And so is free speech.
One of the biggest mistakes I see on chat sites like this is people thinking the chat site is representative of the nation. It is not. This site is representative of people who want to speak very freely, and not be restricted if they want to show immaturity. Since this sort of free speech IS restricted on many chat sites, it is only logical that people who want to do that gravitate here.
So don't even think that since you see liberals on here trying in vain to shout down hate speech (using quite vile hate speech themselves, ironically) that it is representative of liberals in general.
Another phenomenon I've noticed is highly regulated sites which do not allow [almost completely open free speech] tend to not get as much activity. That's why I'm here. That's why I choose to be here with all the trash talk, even though I don't want to partake in it. I can just filter out the garbage and find people to talk to who don't have to mouth off at me. There is such a high activity level that even with objectionable trash talk filtered out, what remains is so much that I still can't read it all or ever hope to keep up on all the threads. Thus, I never have to wait for a reply. There is always stirring conversation going on about something.
I think the people who can keep their cool even when others all around them are losing theirs are VERY cool people.
I am liberal and I cherish the right of free speech. We need to be able to speak freely to discuss the matters of the nation and the world. I disprove your view.
I will defend to the death the right of free speech, even if I don't agree with it or even want to read it.
And it is up to each of us to decide whether or not to listen to what others have to say. I don't think people should be prevented from saying what they want to say. I just don't have to personally listen to, nor immerse myself in, trash talk.
If people are not allowed to make fools out of themselves, how would anyone learn what is foolish?
A good argument focuses on the merit of the discussion, not shock factor in delivery.
It is what is being said, not how it is being said.
