Why Do Most Countries Ban Mail-In Ballots?

Legion

Oderint dum metuant
Despite frequent claims that President Trump’s warning about vote fraud/voting buying with mail-in ballots is “baseless” or “without evidence” about mail-in vote fraud, there are numerous examples of vote fraud and vote buying with mail-in ballots in the United States and across the world.

Indeed, concerns over vote fraud and vote buying with mail-in ballots causes the vast majority of countries to ban mail-in voting unless the citizen is living abroad.

There are fraud problems with mail-in absentee ballots, but the problems with universal mail-in ballots are much more significant.

Still, most countries ban even absentee ballots for people living in their countries.

Most developed countries ban absentee ballots unless the citizen is living abroad or require photo IDs to obtain those ballots.

Even higher percentages of European Union or other European countries ban absentee for in country voters.

In addition, some countries that allow voting by mail for citizens living the country don’t allow it for everyone.

For example, Japan and Poland have limited mail-in voting to those who have certificates verifying that they are disabled.

France banned absentee voting in 1975 because of massive fraud in Corsica, where postal ballots were stolen or bought and voters cast multiple votes. Mail-in ballots were used to cast the votes for dead people.

Examples for other countries are provided here:

Other countries actually want fair elections. Those who say thers is no mail in fraud are the ones conducting it.

Who in our nation is saying it doesn't exist again?

Think about that.

In the United Kingdom postal voting is available to any elector. No reason is required.

Since 1993 mail-in voting has been available to all Canadian citizens.

In the 2016 Australian election 1.2 million postal votes were cast, amounting to 8.5% of total votes.

Looks like a few southern US states are the odd ones out in the Anglosphere. Any ideas why?

That is such a crock of shit, “numerous examples of vote fraud and vote buying with mail-in ballots in the United States”

The right always comes up with a list of examples of voter fraud, the Heritage had an extended list out not to long ago, what they always fail to mention is that these examples are taken from often decades of voting. And given that each year America has hundreds if not thousands of elections, these cherry picked examples taken from years of elections are minuscule in comparison

Same here, pure bullshit

In 2016, 33 million Americans votes by mail, and not a peep was heard from Trump.

Funny how that works.

In Florida, first Trump offered the usual rant on absentee voting, and then realizing the number of Trump supporting OBGs in Florida, he contradicted himself and supported absentee voting

So?

You must apply for a postal ballot if you want to vote by mail, and a signature that matches the registration on file is required.

So?

After an election is announced, you can apply for a postal vote to have your ballot papers sent to you in the mail. You can apply online via the AEC website, or by completing a postal vote application form available from AEC offices at election time.

Yes.

France banned mail-in voting in 1975 because of massive fraud in Corsica, where postal ballots were stolen or bought and voters cast multiple votes. Mail-in ballots were used to cast the "votes" of dead people.

The United Kingdom, which allows postal voting, has had some notable mail-in ballot fraud cases. Prior to recent photo ID requirements, six Labor Party councilors in Birmingham "won" office after what the judge described as a “massive, systematic and organized" postal voting fraud campaign. The fraud was apparently carried out with the full knowledge and cooperation of the local Labor party. There was "widespread theft" of postal votes in areas with large Muslim populations because Labor members were worried that the Iraq war would spur these voters to oppose the incumbent government.

In 1991, Mexico’s 1991 election mandated voter photo-IDs and banned absentee ballots. The then-governing Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) had long used fraud and intimidation with mail-in ballots to win elections. Only in 2006 were absentee ballots again allowed, and then only for those living abroad who requested them at least six months in advance.

If concern about vote fraud with mail-in ballots is delusional, it is a delusion that is shared by most of the world. Even the countries that allow mail-in ballots have protections, such as government-issued photo-IDs. But Americans are constantly assured even this step is completely unnecessary. Without basic precautions, our elections are on course to become the laughing stock of the developed world.

No problem, hypocrisy is always easy to prove; “In an abrupt reversal, President Donald Trump now is encouraging voters in the critical swing state of Florida to vote by mail after months of criticizing the practice, and only days after threatening to sue Nevada over a new vote-by-mail law.”

Unfortunately, your source doesn't substantiate your assertion, Anchovies.

"His encouragement follows a surge in Democratic requests to vote for mail in Florida".

You are a blind ass believer. Explain how mail=in fraud would work. The fact is mail on or pony express there can not be more votes than there are registered voters. Once a vote is accepted it is marked off in the precinct book. They do not just keep marking them off. If they had another vote, they would alert the authorities Mail=in does not create problems with a fair vote. Out system works very well as innumerable audits have proven.
