I see this is:

If the files are released and there's nothing damning in them (highly likely at this point) the Left / Democrats will simply start yelling about a "cover up." Released or not, the Left is fixated on this as a "Get Trump" thing that will finally, after all the other failures, get Trump. From what I can tell, ain't happening anytime soon.

So, from Trump's perspective, he isn't getting reelected. He's done. The Epstein files are a perfect vehicle to keep his enemies occupied with trivial bullshit rather than them focusing on something that might actually make a difference.

It benefits Trump to not release the files for that reason. On the other hand, release of the files and they're being a 'nothing burger' does nothing to placate his opposition. They'll just move on to something else. Better the enemy that you know than starting over with a whole new enemy.

Trump wins with the files held. Trump likely wins with the files released. But with the files released what will be the next "Get Trump" thing the Left will try?

but it is also obviously true that many democrats have also fought to prevent it during the period that they could have

the logical conclusion is that info in here is damaging to both parties
