I think Left and Right can be quantified and measured in generalization on three qualities:

How much the government is a dictatorship versus democratic or nonexistent.
What kind of economy the nation has, centralized and government controlled versus free and open
What the nation stresses in reality, individual freedom or being part of the herd.

Nations that tend towards dictatorships, command economies, and doing as you are told (herd mentality) are Leftist.
