It's what the taxes are used to fund that make the determination. Taxes used to fund the things for which the federal government has a delegated authority (i.e. - military) are not. Taxes used to provide food, clothing, shelter, healthcare, etc. to people that don't pay the taxes that fund it and refuse to provide it to themselves are.

Even when the highest income tax rate was 94%! That's because that rate doesn't kick in until the taxpayer has already earned more than most others and gotten to keep most of that. The high rates only apply to amounts above and beyond those levels.

Any one of us could have been born into a very different situation. If we are able to pay we should. It's not really that much. Well-off people can afford it and still have plentiful lives.

The Constitution, in the first sentence of Article I, Section 8, Clause 1, delegates authority to Congress to lay and collect taxes. Those taxes are to be used to do the things the Constitution says the federal government has authority to do (i.e. - national defense). That those taxes are used for social welfare and redistribution goes beyond that authority.
