Why the Electoral College?

The article that I have linked below has a lot of good information for those who like to debate the validity of the EC.

"The Electoral College was created for two reasons. The first purpose was to create a buffer between population and the selection of a President. The second as part of the structure of the government that gave extra power to the smaller states.

The first reason that the founders created the Electoral College is hard to understand today." ... Read more below:

It was designed to placate the slave states so they would enter the union. It is known.http://time.com/4558510/electoral-college-history-slavery/ In the beginning they allowed 5 slaves to = 3 votes. that was also a way to give more power to the slave states but not provide equality to blacks. The Repubs still don't want to let blacks vote.

Are leftists incapable of understanding the 3/5 Compromise, or do you really think you can capitalize by lying about it? The south wanted to count every single slave as a whole person for the purposes of congressional apportionment. The north argued that they shouldn't be counted at all. In order to placate the south, the 3/5 compromise was offered.

It's kind of like how the south wanted only proportional representation, but the north wanted equal representation, so the Connecticut delegation offered the compromise to have both. Anyway, true to form, you lying leftists have been claiming that the Senate was set-up to benefit slave states.

It's actually very easy to understand, to cockblock the unsubstantial people from political representation. They were after the illusion of democratic representation sans actual democratic representation.

“[A social division exists] between the rich and the poor, the laborious and the idle, the learned and the ignorant. … Nothing, but force, and power and strength can restrain [the latter].”
—John Adams in a letter to Thomas Jefferson (1787)

Same reason senators were appointed by the aristocracy.

The senate was set up to be appointed by the aristocracy to protect the aristocracy from the unsubstantial people, senators were not voted on/in.

If it were the liberals who were benefiting from the composition of the Electoral College...

...all the assholes on the right would be arguing to end it.

Their Dear Leader thinks the Electoral College favors the Democrats.

Why not change the Electoral College?

I wonder how many conservative...or Republican votes that would get?

Were they counted or not? The south wanted them so they could vote for them. They kept them illiterate.

Smaller states= slave states.

I like this part of the article:

"Hamilton and the other founders believed that the electors would be able to insure that only a qualified person becomes President. They believed that with the Electoral College no one would be able to manipulate the citizenry. It would act as check on an electorate that might be duped. "

They didn't know how back then that today's media would be manipulating the citizenry the way it does when it manipulates the news, but they did indeed know that attempts to manipulate the citizenry were a threat.

True ,Fox Gnus does do that. But founders did not know that fake news was going to be invented.

But it gave much less power to the slave states than counting 100% of slaves for representation.

What is the illusion of democratic representation to allow electors chosen by the state legislatures to choose the president?

Are unsubstantial people the deplorables?

3/5 of the slaves were counted for both taxation and representation.

I don't understand "the South wanted them so they could vote for them." The slaves could not vote for anybody--who was voting for whom?

I disagree. The media in those years was the "partisan press" sponsored by the parties. People like Jefferson hired their own journalists to place favorable stories or attack their enemies.

The ability of the media to manipulate the citizenry was not an issue since the people had no role in choosing electors until later.
