Google tells me that this is a slur, not to be used.

What is your opinion.....I always used it as a term of endearment...she likes it.
 
Not really a 'slur'. But has a slightly different meaning than 'wife' depending on the context.
Like, will the wifey let Hawkeye come out and play Pool tonight?
Or, we are playing Poker at Bill's house, you're aren't going to bring the wifey along again, are you?

I don't want to say 'belittles', but does express the wife as less than an equal partner.
Maybe like when women refer to their husbands as 'Meathead'. (?)
