President Barack Obama has unveiled a strategy for a leaner US military focused on countering China's rising power while signalling a shift away from large ground wars against insurgents.


The plan calls for preparing for possible challenges from Iran and China with air and naval power while downplaying any future massive counter-insurgency campaigns like those in Iraq and Afghanistan.


The "defense strategic review" sets out an approach for the US military in an era of austerity, as Obama's administration prepares for $US487 billion in defense cuts over the next 10 years.

 
Big mistake not putting a permanent base in Iraq. The Obama will go down in history as a failure, with that decision as his biggest blunder.

i'm not so sure. i have family in the military and when i brought this issue up several years ago, they said it was a bad idea. their point was that we have access to kuwait. i don't know if i agree with them or not, but for me, i'm torn on whether we should have a base like japan or germany. i lean more towards a base, as it has worked out in the past. however, the past is not always an indicator of the future. i lean away because this is not germany or japan as we invaded.

if we kept a base there, it would make us occupiers to most, if not all, muslims. i honestly don't know the answer to this issue. but my opinion would be......have a base. just one.

Use our bases in Turkey. There's no need for one in Iraq. We have access through Kuwait, and often Jordan, as well as Saudi Arabia...

Access to Kuwait is not a base near or most vulnerable ally. Some folks will always play victim and claim that we are occupiers. I'm sure some Japanese and Germans felt the same way. Now they are allies.

Actually, attempting to bring our military into the 21st Century isn't a bad idea. War is different now. While we still have enough to run a good old fashioned war if it is necessary and haven't given up even close to enough to cripple that, however we need to also have a focus on immediate response teams rather than occupying armies.

our military is the most advanced and then some. in any conflict, you need occupation troops. our last two ventures should have proved that to people.

please re-read my post. specifically 'hardware and technology'. you can cut alot more cost from the DOD budget by cutting back on their big toys than you can on cutting loose bodies.
