Are there some who overused the term, or made it a "better than thou" boast? Of course. But all it means is being aware. Acknowledging the issues that are right in front of our face.

The problem isn't whether you use it or not. It is a political word invented / used by the Left over time. Today it is becoming, as I pointed out earlier with the word Liberal, a pejorative with negative connotations for Progressives and Leftists used by their opponents.

And in each of these tropes, there is a kernel of truth somewhere which is entirely unrepresentative, it gets mashed up by Hannity or Limbaugh or some other propagandist hater and made into a cause celeb. Never is it something in the common experience of most Democrats. I become aware by some jerk here who starts throwing it around because they repaste WND or whatever disreputable crap they copy and paste.

That is what I thought. Neither I or any other established liberal here runs around talking about being woke.

On one hand a number of terms are generational in their nature so it’s understandable that older people for instance aren’t aware of all the phrases young people use.
