Women to now be allowed in combat roles

combat duty may not be the only way to advancement, however, it helps in 99% of the time. that concern is duly noted. of course, as you're well aware, how to balance that concern with your concerns and women's concern regarding combat. i don't see the military changing advancement opportunities after serving in combat or combat zones. if they did, i would not approve. i think there is something to be said about serving in combat or a combat zone...it gives you a different perspective than simply sitting behind a desk.

i hope your daughter returns in full health.

I don't necessarily disagree with you brother .. but my daughter has been in the military for 14 years, 11 as active duty. She's E7, SFC .. and will soon be on the list for E8 because of her outstanding scores at Leadership training. E9 is as high as one could go as a noncom.

Many retire from the military after 20 years and never make E7.

While I agree that combat duty is the key to advancement for most .. that isn't the exclusive route.

From my perspective, I wouldn't care if she retired as an E1 .,. as long as she comes home alive and whole. That baby in my avatar needs her just as much as I do.

OK .. I'm a wimp. Just typing this brings tears to my eyes.

Eh, I don't think a dad caring about his daughter fighting overseas is a wimp even if multiple tears come out. Guys rag on each other for a lot of stuff, this isn't one of them.

We do the same thing here.....every time a women wants to be a cop, join the fire dept., and of course the military.....standards are lowered.....

There's a reason they are called 'daddy's little girl'. Your reaction seems very normal to me. In fact we'd probably be better off as a society if more fathers have the love and caring you show for your child.

you are the furthest thing from a wimp. more men should be able to discuss their feelings, especially about their daughters. you are good man, despite being wrong about everything politically. :D
 
The groundbreaking move recommended by the Joint Chiefs of Staff overturns a 1994 rule prohibiting women from being assigned to smaller ground combat units. Panetta's decision gives the military services until January 2016 to seek special exceptions if they believe any positions must remain closed to women.
