Yep Yurt, you're right as usual.

Police officers should be required to know everything about everyone, or else they have no business trying to arrest of restrain them.

When the find someone they feel may be committing a crime, they should ask the person if they are doing anything illegal and if the person says no, then they should let them go.

Just think of all the money you could make, Yurt.
Just give every law enforcement agency your phone number and that way they can just call you to find out the proper procedure they follow through on; seeing as now you apparently know more then they do, about everything.

They are a serious problem. But are they the disease, or the symptom? I think that Americans have a sadistic streak, and they also love authoritarianism. During the Clinton years, a very young man, a kid really, was convicted of graffiti in (I think?) the Philippines. It's been a long time I am doing this from memory. He was sentenced to being publically flogged. Bill Clinton first said he wanted to protest with the government...Americans went nuts! The problem here is that we weren't publically flogging our youth! We should be tying them all to posts and whipping them! That's why America's youth was out of control! Of course, every generation says this about the youth, and their parents said it about them. But this never occurs to these morons. Anyway, Clinton was not exactly what you would call a morally courageous man, and he backtracked...he did get the kid's sentence reduced to like 50 whips instead of a hundred or something like that. But he backed off making the argument that this was sadistic and America should not stand for it.

Look at Sheriff psychopath in Arizona. People love him. I mean it goes on and on. People find tasering scenes in movies funny. It's not funny, it's torture and it also ends in the victim's death often enough. There is nothing funny about it.

So how do you change the people? See, they'd have to be changed before you could change the police. First the people would have to believe the police were wrong. And a majority of them simply don't. Not unless it happens to them. Look at Free. Unless some cop drags his stupid ass out of a car one night and beats the holy shit out of him on the side of a road, he doesn't care. In fact, he enjoys it. And he's not an anomaly. That's the problem.

As to what small things you can do now? Very little. Write letters to the editors. Encourage drug testing for cops. I don't know if you use a gym, but anyone who has used them for long enough has come across the cop gym. It's usually world or gold's. And that's when you find out that cops are the biggest steroid users in the country. And anyone who has ever known anyone who uses steroids knows that "roid rage" is no myth. But Congress is worried about baseball players. WTF? this country is upside down. I don't have the answers. I know that killing cops isn't the answer. YOu won't change a thing. But you'll be dead.

I've read news stories about cops getting caught with steroids.....and they're disciplined with bullshit like a one day suspension while freely admitting that they would arrest anyone else NOT a cop that had steroids. PART of that problem begins with police officer unions. while most liberals like to think that unions are the peoples representatives, cop unions are the reason why cops get away with rape, murder, violent assaults on we the people. politicians will trip all over their tongues trying to get the support of these unions for election purposes and serfs like USFree and PMP check their names at election time. So no......things will not change now, nor will they unless drastic action is taken.

It can work and doesn't even have to end in violence. I've seen first hand how this can happen and you can also....IF you can find the numbers for it. case in point, a small new mexican town council decided to ban the carry of handguns inside their council meetings. 80+ people showed up for the next council meeting carrying handguns. The 3 sheriffs deputies there decided that it would be in their best interest to NOT enforce that prohibition. NUMBERS make all the difference, but I don't see that ever happening unless serious minded people, like the ones that I know who get angrier and angrier every day with the police misconduct, take a monumental stand. Otherwise, all YOU will end up doing is wasting your breath and time.

It does get you mocked, but if a lot of people who are aware of the steroids problem starting writing letters to the editor, and a perfect time to do that would be when the baseball crap was back in the news, then how many people will each published letter make think? It's not something a lot of people think about it, and the ones who do are usually the guys who are cop wannabes like correction officers and security guards, and other authoritarian types.

If I saw it, I'd videotape it, knowing full well I would likely be arrested. Being arrested doesn't scare me. Now, I don't want to be abused while in custody and that does scare me, but I would do it. But unless you are actually there, there isn't much you can do other than try to raise awareness. If you see a story about tasering for instance, write a letter to the newspaper.

Showing up for council and other public meetings is an excellent idea.

I hope I never come across something like this, because it would indeed end badly for all involved. I know exactly what would end up happening and it's not pretty. It's also why I have pre-written letters set aside for some of these events as contingencies.

No one needs to comply with a Policemans orders to lay on the ground and stop resisting.
If people don't want to comply, they can just refuse, and the Police need to just stand there and wait until the person decides to cooperate.
