Isn't there economic opportunity for all now?

No. There's a David vs. Goliath aspect to business in America. Try opening a hobby store down the street from Walmart or Hobby Lobby. You'd get creamed. Same for all but home businesses. I don't know the answer, but it's a problem to be a small business owner in America. The problem is partly due to both Democrat and Republicans special interests.

Consider minimum wage. Sure, nice idea but how can a small business compete? How can a small business owner hope to be able to help out a friend's 16 year old son by paying them $15 to sweep floors and take out the trash? They can't. It makes more sense to never hire the kid and do it themselves.

Insurance and medical requirements are another issue. Same for ADA requirements. Even if a small business owner could afford to pay for all those things, a big business competitor would just undercut them and drive them into bankruptcy. Is that really a "just economy"? Economic opportunity for all?

With the environment, the planet is literally screaming at us that our course is unsustainable, but many on the right don't seem to see it. They think that no changes are needed.

It's the same economically. Poverty in the world is pretty staggering. Poverty in America is the same. We have become a nation of haves and have nots, and the gap between rich and poor only keeps trending up. It's pretty easy to see where it's headed.

And yet many on the right think that no changes are needed.

Pol Pot wanted to force everyone into a Native American style subsistence living, too.

That's what the TPP could have accomplished. The TPP specifically didn't include China in order to give it the best competition. China would have had to step up it's game labor-wise if it wanted to play ball.

I had a small business. 5 employees. If done right you can do far better than working for a corporation. Some are just not cut out to be self employed. Some do better working for Exxon. Some make a career in the military. There's plenty of economic opportunity for anyone willing to work. They just have to find their niche.
You make it sound as if small business is the only satisfying way to earn a living. There's folks in my industry that hated being self employed. I loved it. It was silly how much I earned for the amount of time I actually worked but I'd planted the seeds , fertilized and nurtured the business for it to work out that way.
The lowest paid of my employees earned about $55,000/yr with bonuses, way more than they could've made being self employed with their skills and working fewer. hrs.
