Sort of. There is a draft system, but currently zero people are drafted. If Congress decides to start drafting people, barron would be among the first. People who turn 20 in this calendar year would be drafted first, with people turning 21 drafted second, and on and on until 26. Even if barron could escape this year, it would catch up with him.

We were barely able to supply enough soldiers to occupy Iraq, which is half the size of Iran, and far less motivated to resist. That would make a draft look necessary...

But it does not appear trump wants to occupy Iran, so that would make a draft look totally unnecessary.

We shall see.

Although it is likely, just as with Vietnam, Barron would get a deferment because he is currently attending college--like Bill Clinton did back then.

After Vietnam, college deferments were limited to completing the current semester, with the exception of seniors who could complete two semesters to get a degree. That means that barron could be drafted in May, and be in Tehran in September. It is unlikely, but legally possible.

And what do you suppose might happen if any commander in chiefs child was drafted and was captured by the enemy? How do suppose that might change the way the commander in chief executes the war? You people are first level thinkers. In other words simpletons.

FDR had four sons live to adulthood, and all five served in the US military in combat positions. They actually tried to serve. They accepted demotions to serve in combat.

It was a different time, and very different people. The Roosevelts believed they owed America for their good fortune. the trumps believe America owes them for their good fortune.

During Vietnam, most draftees never went there. Their time of service was just two years and insufficient to allow for a one-year tour. So, most backfilled positions in the US and some in Europe.

Two years was more than enough time to do a one year tour in Vietnam. It was not enough time to do a one year tour in Vietnam and a one year tour in America or Europe. We needed to keep forces in both, so a draftee had about a one third chance of going to Vietnam.

Between 1965 and 1973 over 1.7 million men were drafted. Around 648,500 draftees, or 38% of that number served in Vietnam, comprising about a quarter of the US forces deployed to the country. 17,725 draftees died, just over 30% of all American combat deaths in the war.
