I do think it's the future, for a lot of reasons. There are so many collaborative tools now that working from home doesn't need to be an isolating experience. They have also done a few studies that show that it actually increases productivity, as well.

Naturally, there are some workers who take advantage and just sleep in & go to the movies, but that's pretty easy to identify in a pretty short timeframe. Most people who telecommute end up working more (like those hours that they were previously wasting on commutes), and also get more done due to fewer interruptions.

I get Yahoo's logic w/ certain creative jobs - there is something to be gained from just random conversations had at work - but ultimately, there are much greater cost-savings in a remote workforce.

I think some of them also offer on-site day care. Computer Associates was doing that back in the early 2's, maybe even late 90's. I don't know if they still do, but at the time I spoke to people who worked there and they all said that it sounds good to everyone else, but they gave you all this shit so that you never could leave. The hours were brutal. But I am all for on site daycare at any rate, and she ought to bring that in.

Not buying it. First of all what if they take her up on the offer to go back in house? Then it backfires. Plus for some she may have to offer relo particularly since this has garnered attention. Wonder who're led the internal communication. That is grounds for dismissal.

I actually work from home three or four days a week. If I was being honest I am definitely more productive in the office. Much easier to step out of your office and talk to someone face to face than call them on the phone all day. I'm just not a fan of the hour and fifteen minute to hour and a half commute each way.

I am open to it, I just have my doubts. Maybe because my background is all in creative. I just can't imagine it. And of course now from a different perspective, so many people are total slackers...but if they can figure that out fast, then I guess it's okay.

Well, it depends on your home situation. I mean, take you for example. Sure, Darla's not going to be crusing by your desk asking "gotta minute" but your mom will be nagging you to go play outside for a while. It's SUCH A NICE DAY, after all.
 
Tech companies like Apple, Facebook and Google have buses that drive through San Francisco each morning picking up workers and driving them to their Silicon Valley campuses which allow the employees to work while commuting. From a real estate perspective its interesting how rent gets more expensive the closer one is to one of the pick up spots.

I guess everyone's experience is different. I've worked from home for 10 years, and it's insane how much I get done here, and also how much more I work (probably not a good thing, but it is for the company). Also, when I think about it, it's made me more loyal to the company overall. Most people where I work are telecommuters, and it's working.

When I was doing my own thing, I started out doing it from home. FIrst of all, I went nuts. I hated it. I am the type who needs to get up early, put on something nice to wear, and hit the office. I like being around people. Then I found that i got really lazy. I ended up going to my brother's office building and working from there three days a week. That's how I ended up doing what I'm doing now. It started out as me just needing to get out of the house. But I do totally accept that everyone is different and many people may find they get more done at home. (I also ate more, and that got my ass out of the house fast I can tell you that!)

That's great. You have the personality for it then, and the character. Not like me and Cawacko obviously! Two slackers. It's great you were able to find a company so suited to you.

I'm like you then where I want to be in the office environment with people around. That gets me going. I go nuts sitting at home alone. I can only talk to myself in the mirror for so many hours a day. Also it's not as much fun to ask yourself at 5pm to go a happy hour. My office only has six people in it and it often feels like a morgue. I need the action around me.

Yeah - I do feel lucky that way, and understand it's not for everyone. I tried to bring a couple of friends from previous jobs on, and both went nuts in the first few weeks. I miss some aspects of the traditional office interaction, but overall, there's no way I could go back.

I can guarantee you there is zero chance of my cruising by his desk asking "gotta minute" DH. I have him on IA, that was at me? LOL Man these people are delusional.

We are so alike this way then. I could have written this post, the mirror, the action, the happy hour, yep. That's pretty funny since we have so little in common otherwise. We would probably really like each other if we were officemates.
 
And Cawacko imagine how much fun we could have at superfreak's expense if he worked there too! I have some great pranks I have built up over the years for pricks like him (there is always one in every office). And you know he would horn in on the happy hours trying to be cool, but I've got something for that too. The laughs we could have.
