Yes To Massive Tariffs! Fuck yes.

yes.

it's niggling stupidity relativ to the the importance of self reliance and keeping american money in America.

This is where philosophy and best intentions run up against the real world. I laud you for having a dream. And I agree that dream sounds wonderful. It would be GREAT if America had manufacturing back on our shores. I would LOVE IT if it were to happen. But there's more than just the stick that has to be considered.

I'm not a business guy. Just a lowly corporate drone but I've been in this arena now for almost a quarter of a century and if there's one thing I DO know it is that the business people REQUIRE that those niggling stupid questions be answered. NOTHING happens without consideration of those niggling stupid questions. Nothing. Never has and never will.

I can't tell you the number of mind numbing corporate meetings I've been to where someone is running an NPV analysis for the most trivial changes to the company. I mean TRIVIAL. And I've seen plenty of REALLY GREAT IDEAS die because the return on the investment was found to be less than what they wanted.

I once came up with a technique to cut processing time on a batch process by about 50%. A 50% REDUCTION in time in the batch process. Sounds great doesn't it? Do you know why it was never utilized? Because if we reduced the time in the batch process it would leave the batch process systems unused and negatively impacted the depreciation on the machine. It was a great idea that died immediately because of niggling stupid questions.

the law is the law.

the government has this power to protect the economy and the people within it.

are you an anarchist?

Sounds like central control of the economy. I think resorting to Communism is probably not the best way to fix our lack of manufacturing base.

are you an anarchist?

Why do you ask? Because I have come to the unfortunate point in my life where I have more business acumen than I ever wanted?

May I ask what industry you work in? Just generally (no personal info). If your industry is unencumbered by annoying bean counters I would LOVE to work there.

yes. we have a centralized economy.

communism includes the use of central bankers to centralize the economy.

I believe we should fire the central bankers, do you?

the whole federal government was funded off tariffs on imports to spur american production for the first 150 years of our nations.

why is the IRS INTERNAL?

research that.

the truth will set you free.

So you say. Show me the proof, if you can.

So you say. Show me the proof, if you can.
Tariffs have historically served a key role in the trade policy of the United States. Their purpose was to generate revenue for the federal government and to allow for import substitution industrialization (industrialization of a nation by replacing imports with domestic production) by acting as a protective barrier around infant industries. They also aimed to reduce the trade deficit and the pressure of foreign competition. Tariffs were one of the pillars of the American System that allowed the rapid development and industrialization of the United States.

Lao is clearly not tracking on the real-world implications of the plan. His usual response to any real-world topic introduced is to simply ignore it.

I am guessing they haven't had to spend any time around bean counters and hearing how the sausage is made in industry.

I agree with Lao's desire to have more manufacturing on our shores. But I'm also aware of the realities that will make that harder and probably won't result in the utopia that is proposed.

Repatriating our manufacturing WILL RESULT IN INCREASED PRICES. I'm willing to accept that and I'd gladly pay more for the good of ensuring more of my fellow Americans can have a good job and a great standard of living. But there are lots of Americans that will not be able to afford the goods. Right now an expected inflationary spike from the COVID shutdown has resulted in extreme discomfort for a lot of Americans living on the edge. The proposed plan of repatriating those manufacturing jobs will have a similar effect.

Tariffs have historically served a key role in the trade policy of the United States.

But in the middle of the 19th century it proved to be insufficient to fund the needs of the nation.

Their purpose was to generate revenue for the federal government and to allow for import substitution industrialization (industrialization of a nation by replacing imports with domestic production) by acting as a protective barrier around infant industries.

The problem with relying on tariff's solely as the federal revenue is that if the tariffs are SUCCESSFUL and people stop buying those goods it will sap the federal revenue.

They also aimed to reduce the trade deficit and the pressure of foreign competition. Tariffs were one of the pillars of the American System that allowed the rapid development and industrialization of the United States.

In a largely agricultural world with very limited industry and a far, far, far smaller consumer base and in a world where transportation costs were much, much higher.

wrong.

all those reasons are dumb shit nothing.

we need to re-industrialize.

you're just a globalist traitor to all free people.

where were you on the central bankers?

they're NOT the actual communists?

That doesn't prove anything that's relevant to Trump's proposal. in the 21st century world we live in.

Want to try again?

If that's all you can come up with, we're done here.

Given that I actually agree with you on the desire to have manufacturing jobs in the US I'm uncertain why you seem to find my position so offensive.

When you tell a toddler they can't have the toy in the store because it's too expensive, calling mommy a "bitch" probably isn't going to move the needle.

you're just still a globalist brainwash victim. I'm sad for you, not offended.

tariffs are totally doable.

all nations do them.

we can have tariffs.

you're just a globalist brainwashed idiot.

When you are able to figure out the nuts and bolts of the plan it'll be worth a listen. But it will require knowledge of how industry works.
