I am confused. You are saying these illegal immigrants crossed over the Italian-American border in caravans of unaccompanied migrants from Italy... I keep looking at the map, and cannot find the Italian-American border, or any land connection they could cross over.

In fact, the danger seems to be legal travelers, especially American citizens, who can fly quickly between places. Caravans of children that take months to get anywhere would rarely carry diseases that pass through a person in about a week.

Not just Chinese tourists there were hundreds of Chinese companies based in Firenza because of the cachet acquired from a Made in Italy label. There were hundreds more that based in Milano as well.
