I'm forced to break my word to ignore you because that's just crazy. I was baptized Catholic and educated by nuns in grade school and was certainly taught that those practicing other religions wouldn't get to heaven. They wouldn't necessarily go straight to hell but they'd need to spend some time in limbo before they got "prayed into heaven."

Exactly. That was precisely my catholic education as well. Taft is likely ignorant in this case and not being dishonest, but still entirely wrong. Being that he is so incorrect, why would he bother making the statement though?

To a large degree I agree with you, AP. But all evidence known about the origins of civilization and societies point to the fact that people discovered they could better survive in groups and then survive better as particular jobs were divided up amongst them based mostly on qualification or the perception of qualification. I'm certain that particular interests and the innate ability and nature of mankind also played a part. Religion? I think that came about as the frightened, huddled and sometimes starving masses needed something other than simply nature or other solutions and/or understandings offered up by other people to blame or bless according to their situations. To me, religion is a game for fools. Any comprehensive look at christianity alone reveals this without doubt. Other religions are similar but ultimately the same.
