22 Days: Kamala Harris has not held a press conference since emerging as presumptive Democratic nominee​


Vice President Kamala Harris has gone 22 days as of Monday without holding a formal press conference or sit-down interview since becoming the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee.

Harris became the de facto nominee after President Biden endorsed her on July 21 when he dropped out of the race, and she has since officially clinched the nomination. She has been busy on the campaign trail, spoken at various events, and given informal remarks to reporters at various points, but hasn’t done a formal press conference or wide-ranging interview in the three weeks that have followed.

Harris, amid mounting criticism on that front, briefly talked to reporters traveling with her in Michigan on Thursday. Speaking for just over a minute, she said she looked forward to debating former President Trump on Sept. 10 on ABC and defended the military record of her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz.


She also said her team was trying to set up an interview by the end of the month. On Saturday, she briefly addressed reporters in Phoenix, taking questions about her policy platform, the latest news out of the Gaza war, and the role of the Federal Reserve.

The left-leaning Washington Post editorial board challenged Harris over dodging the media on Sunday, saying of her opponent, "at least he has taken questions." The Post said she should account for her numerous policy shifts, including on fracking, border security and private health insurance....

Then you should be content, she did a campaign swing thru battleground States talking about women having control over their bodies, being able to join a Union, affordable health care, retiring in dignity, and a whole array of generalities, just like building that wall that Mexico was paying that you swallowed

You're right, from a political perspective she shouldn't (or at least seems that way now). She has great momentum in the polls so why change anything.

From the country's perspective I think this is going to be a fascinating case study when we look back. The media is basically swooning over her. On one hand we know who she is but at the same time we really kind of don't. She's never had to go through a long primary. She's walked back multiple positions she's held previously but because she doesn't do press conferences or really face tough interviews she's not getting drilled over it like others would, to really understand what she believes.

Since Trump entered politics what was expected or normal in the past has been redefined, now the importance is to keep your name and profile out there, regardless of content. Image and personality is as vital as presenting policy statements. The media isn’t “swooning” over her, rather she is the news at the moment

And the same for the promised health care and infrastructure plans Trump said he had but never delivered?

VP’s don’t do anything, tell us something Pence did, and her record is what she stands for, which is nearly diametrically opposite of Trump’s
