66% - Angry, 60% say NEITHER party has the answer...

You're starting to sound like a broken record. I'm not contending that the loyalists weren't regarded as "conservative" at the time; rather, I'm stating the simple and obvious truth that 18th century conservatives were very different from modern conservatives, just as classical liberals differ from "progressive liberals" such as yourself. If a modern conservative went back in time to 1776, he would be considered a liberal. And if a progressive went back in time, he would be charged with treason and put to death by a firing squad.
But if you wish to remain ignorant, that is your prerogative.

ahhhhhhh, those were the days

no, just that the country did a 180.....I want a change....

The country did not do a 180 we are still as divided as ever.
We are still spending like drunken sailors.
We are sill in Iraq and Afganistan.
We are still in a recession.
And pundits are still spreading messages of fear. The targets have just changed a bit.

Your statement was incorrect. While it was not conservative, it was also not progressive. Revolution is by its nature radical.
So then was the war for independence a revolution? George Washington really ended up with more power than his former soveriegn had in his own country. Did our war against the brits really change who was in charge? Landed white dudes here, landed white dudes there. We did revolt against british rule, but it wasn't very revolutionary.

sure it was. instead of landed white dudes ruling by birth, they now get elected.

There's no doubt in my mind that you would have sided with the British in 1776.

Like most liberals, you're a pussy.

Like all conservatives, with your allergy to freedom and fetish for cruelty, you would have sides with the British, and me and the other freedom loving liberals and socialist would have been on the side of the liberals and socialists.

We need another genocide on conservatives, just like in 1776. Liberals don't have enough balls to do it anymore, but it has to be done. This scum can't go on living and annihlating our grand nation.

1. The Revolution began in conservative New England, and had the weakest support in the South. The Middle Colonies were the most divided, but opposition tended to come from the major inner cities (this applies to all three regions).

2. The Revolution was, to most people, a referendum on English constitutional rights. The colonists believed themselves to have a proper interpretation of these rights, were greatly influenced by the Whigs in their interpretations, and even viewed common practices back in Britain such as the practice of Virtual Representation as threats to liberty. Most people did not buy into the rhetoric of Thomas Paine that independence should be declared to fight against the monarch and that fighting for constitutional rights was a pointless gesture. John Adams even wrote his Thoughts on Government out of opposition to Common Sense.

3. The things that the Americans were fighting for were not new ideas anymore. Lockean philosophy was more than a century old, and the unwritten English constitution was an old tradition grounded in the common law concept. Real Whig Ideology (which was fairly new) states that (a) liberty is a privilege inhereted by a lucky few groups of people in the world and (b) it is constantly under attack. This merely reinforced the paranoia that Parliament was trampling on their rights as Englishmen.

4. The mentality that helped create a revolutionary movement was shaped by events from the previous century, such as the Glorious Revolution, the English Civil War, and the establish of local republican governments. The colonists were actually pissed off when they tried to bring the Glorious Revolution home by shutting down governing bodies that had existed (and particularly those that had been created, such as the royal charter of New England under Gov. Edmund Andros) under James II, and were rebuked by the new government for their efforts.

The colonists were fighting for what had become an old order, as they saw it.

Yeah thousands of the conservatives moved to Canada.

I don't have to tell you things are bad. Everybody knows things are bad. It's a depression. Everybody's out of work or scared of losing their job. The dollar buys a nickel's worth; banks are going bust; shopkeepers keep a gun under the counter; punks are running wild in the street, and there's nobody anywhere who seems to know what to do, and there's no end to it.

We know the air is unfit to breathe and our food is unfit to eat. And we sit watching our TVs while some local newscaster tells us that today we had fifteen homicides and sixty-three violent crimes, as if that's the way it's supposed to be!

We all know things are bad -- worse than bad -- they're crazy.

It's like everything everywhere is going crazy, so we don't go out any more. We sit in the house, and slowly the world we're living in is getting smaller, and all we say is, "Please, at least leave us alone in our living rooms. Let me have my toaster and my TV and my steel-belted radials, and I won't say anything. Just leave us alone."

Well, I'm not going to leave you alone.

I want you to get mad!

I don't want you to protest. I don't want you to riot. I don't want you to write to your Congressman, because I wouldn't know what to tell you to write. I don't know what to do about the depression and the inflation and the Russians and the crime in the street.

All I know is that first, you've got to get mad.

You've gotta say, "I'm a human being, goddammit! My life has value!"

So, I want you to get up now. I want all of you to get up out of your chairs. I want you to get up right now and go to the window, open it, and stick your head out and yell,

"I'm as mad as hell,

and I'm not going to take this anymore!!"

Damn how things haven't changed.

How can you waste someone's time on a message board, aren't we all wasting time here?

There is a difference between spending time here discussing issues and having some senile old fool posting meaningless crap that rarely has anything to do with the topic at hand.

There are plenty of elderly individuals on here that are not fools. But USCit is an idiot.

I take back all the good things I said about you.

An idiot like me that saw the finiancial fall before you did?
An idiot like me that said invading Iraq was wrong and would be a long quagmire?
An idiot like me that said anyone who voted for Bush in 2004 was an idiot?
