This is just awful;
Tennessee man who plotted New York mosque attack won’t face terrorism charges

doggart14n-2-web.jpg

A Tennessee man won't face terrorism charges for plotting an attack against an upstate New York mosque — and attorneys claim it's because federal terrorism statutes almost exclusively focus on foreign extremists.

Robert Doggart was arrested in April 2015 after authorities discovered that he had been trying to recruit people to burn down a mosque in "Islamberg," a self-named, predominantly Muslim community near Hancock, according to court records.

Doggart, 65, who ran for Congress as an Independent in 2014, allegedly went on right-wing online forums and openly talked about using AR-15 assault rifles to attack Muslims because he believed the small upstate community was an extremist training camp, records show. Authorities intercepted Doggart's alleged plot before anyone was hurt.

He's facing one count of solicitation to commit arson, one count of solicitation to commit a civil rights violation and two counts of threat in interstate commerce. But he's not facing any terrorism charges and has been on house arrest since his initial capture.

Two hunters indicted in friendly-fire shooting they blamed on immigrants

images

Two hunters have been indicted in a West Texas shooting they falsely claimed was started by unauthorized immigrants.
Michael Bryant and Walker Daugherty were indicted by a grand jury Wednesday on a charge of using deadly conduct by discharging firearms in the direction of others, Presidio County Sheriff Danny Dominguez told CBS7.
A Presidio County sheriff's deputy responded to the Jan. 6 shooting at Circle Dug Ranch, near the border community of Candelaria, where he found Daugherty and Edwin Roberts with gunshot wounds, the station reports.
They said immigrants attacked them to try to steal the RV the hunting group was using — a false claim that was widely circulated, including by Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller, according to a piece by The Houston Chronicle.
Miller, who's been scrutinized for sharing wrong information in controversial social media posts, wrote about the incident in a Facebook note that was shared more than 6,500 times before it was deleted.
"This is why we need the wall and to secure our borders," Miller wrote. "There are violent criminals and members of drug cartels coming in and it must put a stop to it before we have many more Walker Daughertys."
It turns out, the incident involved friendly fire.
An investigation revealed that Daugherty shot Roberts and Bryant shot Daugherty, Dominguez told CBS7.
U.S. Border Patrol agents assisted the sheriff's office by searching the area with thermal imaging technology and didn't find signs of anyone on the ranch other than the hunting party, the sheriff's office told BigBendNow.com.
"A thorough search of the perimeter of the ranch house by U.S. Border Patrol involving an approximate 30 agents, including expert trackers, concluded that there was no sign of human pedestrian traffic leading to or from the ranch that night," the sheriff's office said.

Tonawanda man, ditched by friends, charged after shotgun goes off

mccurrymichael.jpg

A City of Tonawanda man was charged Sunday morning with four felonies after he allegedly angrily confronted two people in a Dexter Street home with a shotgun, which went off when he was pushed.

No one was hurt.

Michael P. McCurry, 57, was allegedly upset that he had been left at a motel room on Niagara Falls Boulevard after a night of drinking. When he arrived back at his Dexter Street home at about 6:30 a.m., he seized a 12-gauge shotgun and confronted two individuals in the bedroom, who had left him to walk home.

According to Tonawanda city police, he pointed the loaded weapon at a man and a woman, who were in the bed, and told them to "get out." A third person who heard the ruckus then pushed him, causing the gun to fire through the floor and through the living room ceiling below. The man and woman left and called police, who recovered a shotgun – still holding additional shells in the chamber – hidden in an attic.

McCurry was charged with criminal use of a firearm, first-degree attempted assault, third-degree reckless endangerment and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon – all felonies – as well as a second-degree menacing with a weapon, a misdemeanor. He was held for arraignment.

Orange County deputies on leave after fatal shooting of home invasion suspect

16539235-1487547796-uid14875477973268-300x225.jpg

EFLAND, N.C. — The Orange County Sheriff's Office is investigating after deputies fatally shot a man late Saturday night at a home in Efland.

The events that led to the shooting began at about 10 p.m. at a home on Old Hillsborough Road in Mebane, authorities said.

David Parker, the man who lives in the home, said 46-year-old Keo Crockett broke into the home and pointed a gun at Parker and his girlfriend.

Parker says Crockett put him in a choke hold before leaving the home. Parker, his girlfriend and the couple's 4-year-old daughter, who was home during the incident, were not seriously hurt.

Following the break-in, Mebane police contacted the Orange County Sheriff's Office and asked deputies to go to Crockett's home on Virginia Lee Lane in Efland.

When deputies arrived at the home and knocked on the door, an armed man came outside the home and raised the gun at deputies, who opened fire and killed the man.

The sheriff's office says the man deputies shot and killed was the same person Mebane police were looking for in the home invasion, although officials did not confirm that Crockett was the man killed.

The names of the deputies involved in the shooting have not been released. They have been placed on administrative duty, which is standard procedure in an officer-involved shooting.

Orange County Sheriff Charles Blackwood would not comment on the incident Sunday, saying only that the matter has been turned over to the district attorney's office.

Kyle Dawson, who lives across the street from where the fatal confrontation took place, said his brother was outside at the time of the shooting.

"He heard the gunshots, and he came running inside. And the next thing we know, my mom and my brother all run outside trying to see what happened," Dawson said.

UPDATE: Gunman who killed self after random shooting on 283 identified, police say

EAST HEMPFIELD TOWNSHIP, Pa. —
Police are investigating a random shooting and suicide that happened Sunday night on Route 283 in Lancaster County.

Police said the incident started around 6:30 p.m. on Route 283 near the Salunga exit. The shooter, who has been identified as Raymond Wiley, 33, of Wilmington, Del., was driving with a passenger west when he reportedly fired out the window, striking another driver, according to investigators.

The victim, Michael Lohr, 67, was hit in the upper back. He was taken to the hospital and has since been released. Officials say the shooting appears to be entirely random.

Shortly after the shots were fired, another driver on Route 283 called 911 to report a reckless driver. Manheim Borough Police responded and followed the car as it “traveled north on Hossler Road at a high rate of speed,” according to the Lancaster County District Attorney’s Office.

“The vehicle abruptly stopped at Hossler and Colebrook roads. The male passenger exited the vehicle and reported to police on scene the driver had a gun and was suicidal. A single shot was then fired. Police found the driver had shot himself in the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene,” reads a statement from the DA’s office. “Preliminary information links the man who shot himself was the shooter in the previous incident on Route 283.”

Police say Wiley had been “dealing with personal issues.” Police said they also interviewed Wiley’s passenger and they do not believe he was involved in the shooting.

If you have any information that could help investigators, you can call East Hempfield police at 717-898-3103 or Manheim police at 717-665-2481.

Well directed efforts from the NRA and other gun rights groups won the day during the Heller case. Since you're presumptively labeling gun owners as fear mongering and paranoid, then it would stand to reason their efforts resulted in Heller being won. And then again with McDonald.

Jacksonville police: Man shot wife in the head

JACKSONVILLE (KATV) — Jacksonville police have arrested a man accused of shooting his wife on Sunday.
Around 1:00 a.m., police responded to the 1300 block of Lee Street for a victim with a gunshot wound. They found 53-year-old Vanessa Hawkins in the master bedroom with a gunshot wound to the forehead.

Police say the couple's 22-year-old son was inside the home at the time of the shooting and called 911. He told officers his father, 63-year-old Larry James Hawkins, shot his mother.
According to a police report, Hawkins had been drinking. When officers asked him what happened, he said "it was an accident."
Hawkins was taken into custody for first-degree murder, possession of a firearm by certain persons and aggravated assault on a family member. In 2002, Hawkins was convicted of aggravated robbery.
As of Sunday night, no bond has been set for Hawkins.

Deputies: Winter Park woman shot husband during argument

A 28-year-old woman is behind bars after she shot her husband twice during an argument Saturday, deputies said.

Tina Marie Poirier is accused of shooting her husband, Dennis Lugo, while they argued at their home on the 1000 block of Hampshire Court in Winter Park. Hampshire Court is located north of State Road 436 in Seminole County.

The argument was about Lugo’s mistress, who is pregnant with his child, an arrest affidavit states.

After the couple began arguing around 9 p.m. Saturday, Poirier grabbed a handgun from a nightstand and fired shots at Lugo, 48, deputies said.

He was hit in the right wrist and on the left side of his chest.

A neighbor called 911 and Lugo was transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center. He was in serious condition and was undergoing surgery Sunday morning, records show.

Poirier was taken into custody and charged with attempted homicide and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, the report states.
