American exceptionalism....

I used to live in South Shore...yeah, worked at Harah's. I never understood the lure of them. Locals avoided the casino's except for work, them being the major employer. The great thing about Tahoe is that there is just so much to do, no matter the season.

Before moving to Washingtom I owned a home up in the back country. You ever here of the Rubicon? The place of the Jeepers Jamboree. I practically lived at the start of the trail; the power literally ended about a mile past my place...God's country! Nothing like the Sierra Nevada's~~~

The wife and I are considering our retirement move, which should occur in 10 to 15 years. We'll be looking for low taxes, mild winters and awesome skiing. The Nevada side of Tahoe is under consideration. The way I figure, folks come from all around and literally throw money at Nevada (gambling), so taxes must be low for the folks that live there.

By the way I have two relatives that worked casinos.

A cousin of mine worked Atlantic City as a card dealer for almost 20 years. She recently got let go because of downsizing. Also, my sister-in-law worked a Vegas casino as a server, wearing one of those sexy outfits for about 15 years. Both women were drop-dead gorgeous in their day, and casinos love to hire great looking young women, then let them go when age creeps up on them.

There was a small commercial vessel by the restaurant that we ate at, and lots of large bins stacked up outside. What type of fish do they harvest?

Well I know they catch Mackinaw and Kokanee out of the lake, trout from the river and salmon. I note they serve typically out of the area fish in the restaurants.

What did you see on the menu?

Reno is rapidly growing, but there are other towns that are comfortable if you don't mind desert atmosphere and terrain. With Tahoe so close, you've got the best of both world. You do realize that Nevada is Harry the Hack Reid's stompin gtrounds. He may be a neighbor, assuming he lives another 10-15 years. He's like 70 already isn't he?

I am unfamiliar with Nevada's tax structure...but North Shore would not be my choice for a mild winter :) The infamous Donner's Pass is not too far away ifin you get my snow drift?

Idaho and Utah are, from what I have been told, great for their decent winter's and slopes. Don't get me wrong, I am a Sierra Nevada fan for life. I think they are by far the best the west has to offer, but if I was gonna live in Tahoe during the winter it would be South Shore. Have you ever skied Heavenly?

I'm typically very adventurous in a menu selection and I don't recall seeing a local-sounding fish on the menu.

Reid's unlikely to be re-elected. If I move to Nevada there will be two more votes against him.

We were on Donner Pass road on the way to Squaw. I'd stay away from the north shore because of the harsh winters, and out of California because of the taxes.

I haven't skied Heavenly but The Southern Babe has. She said it was the ultimate, but decided on Squaw for this trip because of she got a great deal on a condo.

North, West, and East Shores of Tahoe are the best for beauty. Heavenly is heavenly, there is no doubt about it, but it is so commercialized there for Tahoe that it's hard to see the real beauty like you did at Squaw. All the casinos and all.

I wish you would have checked out North Star. It was close enough a drive and you would have liked it there too. Snow in the that area has not been stellar these last several years on either shore if you ask the locals. They are very grateful for what they have this year and some of last year.

We were originally planning to visit other ski resorts but since we got such a great deal on a codo withing walking distance of the lifts we did just that.

In the south you have Kingsbury and Zephyr Cove that are spectacular and on the Nevada side...but I agree that South Shore by and large is the least attractive.

You ever hike into Fallen Leaf? I have not been there in forever...used to make it a regular weekend destination in the day. The hot springs in Markleeville was another fave....waaaaaaaaaaaa I miss my mts :(

I notice they have been conspicuously absent from this forum. I could really use them for my Page 3. Let me know if you find them. In fact, let everyone know.
