2016 election: 304 (Trump), 227 (Clinton) ... Hardly a 50/50 split...

The tipping point state in 2016 was Wisconsin, with a margin of victory of 0.77%... That is a less than 1% victory, so nearly a 50/50 split as I said.

1992 election

Not in the last 25 years, but lets look at it for a comparison. The tipping point state in 1992 was Pennsylvania, with a margin of victory of 9.2%.

So before the last 25 years, there were huge possible margins of victory. For the last 25 years, there have been margins of victory of less than 1%, in 27 different elections, and in 3 different systems of districting.
