Americans, by & large, have a memory about as long as the average sitcom.

Marion Barry was busted smoking crack on video, and then a few years later was elected mayor of DC again.

George Wallace stood on the steps of the University of Alabama to try and stop blacks from being allowed in school there. Then 4 years later he carried the black vote in his reelection as Governor.

Ronald Reagan was embroiled in a huge scandal involving trading arms for hostages. And a few years later he is granted virtual sainthood by republicans.

You know it's funny to me, it seems Democrat Liberals are the ones obsessed with race, not Republicans. We don't care what color you are, as long as you can get the job done.... Condi and Colin are good examples. It's the Democrat Libs who keep bringing up this thing about Obama's race, as if it makes some difference in how we vote.

Here's the thing, going by the last two elections, we pretty much established the country is split right down the middle... 50/50.... now, if Republicans vote Republican and Democrats vote Democrat, and Obama loses, wouldn't that mean the racist people who didn't support Obama, came from the Democrat side, not the Republican?

I don't really think appointments are the best way to judge that. Whenever politicians have to appoint people, they are making a rational decision to save THEIR OWN ass, and they know they have to put up a diverse facade. Clarence Thomas, for instance, was completely unqualified to be a supreme court justice, and was appointed, basically, because he was the only conservative black guy H.W. could think of at the time, and he knew he need to replace the only black guy on the court with another black guy or else he'd face a whole lot of shit at election time.

But who do Republicans actually elect to lead them?

White people, unanimously. There's not a single black Republican elected to federal office in America. There are also no black Republican governors, and I do not believe there are any black statewide officials at all, although I can't verify that.

BTW, Clinton had a more diverse cabinet. Seven of his cabinet appointments were black, with a smaller cabinet, so it was actually disproportionately diverse. Although, again, that was mostly a facade. None of the black appointments really ever held a lot of power, besides possibly Condi. Executive cabinets these days generally don't have a lot of responsibility, which is why so many high profile appointments have quit over the years.

I was under the impression that Secretary of State was a fairly powerful position. I was also under the impression that Colin Powell is black.
