In a trade war between Canada/Mexico and the US - Who will win?

Teflon Don

I'm back baby
The answer is simple. The US will win. It is simple math. For the economically challenged, I will explain

Mexico's GDP is $1.8 trillion a year. Its exports to the US are $506 billion a year which is 28% of its economy

Canada's GDP is $2.1 trillion. Its exports to the US are $413 billion a year which is 19% of its economy

US exports to Mexico are less than 2% of our $27.7 trillion GDP

US exports to Canada are less than 2% of our $27.7 trillion GDP

Anyone thinking that Canada and Mexico are going to take a double digit hit to their economy by taking us on is fooling themselves. The EU can't spend enough to offset what we don't buy. So let them bloviate. They will cave in the end. They always do.

The economics lesson is free. What you do with it is up to you

Yeah - I already miss those days. 16 million jobs added, the market breaking records, people in the Cabinet w/ actual relevant experience & qualifications. It's easy to get nostalgic.
Do you miss inflation and rising interest rates too? How about the mayor of a town of a town of 100K running the department of Transportation. Texas has 43 cities with more than 100K population. The Dept of Transportation has 59K employees.

The Oligarchs will win, the American taxpayers will lose. This is why consumers are losing confidence in the economy.

Sure America will "win" but only if you are willing to see most American individuals suffer. When a trade war starts and the prices start going up it doesn't tend to just limit itself to the stuff under tariff. It tends to spread across the economy.

You want to shoot us in the foot and then tell us it's no big deal? Fine. Just don't tell us that our foot isn't blown off in the process. It's gonna leave a limp.

Yeah guacamole is expensive.

The point is to change Canada's and Mexico's behavior because they can't tolerate the price increases as much as we can.

The tariffs will add less than .1% to inflation, which is why it is still going down (though STILL not at 2%) even though he keeps doing tariffs.
I see you know a lot more then the top economists in the world.
Because they are NOT saying what you are. they have been saying inflation is going up and Trump may be driving us into a DEEP Recession / Depression.
As of two min. ago the Dow was down ANOTHER over 700 points.

Thankfully the inflation rate dropped down to regular levels under Biden. Right now there's thrash on the markets precisely BECAUSE of fears of inflation.

So you better tell all your stock-market trader friends that they are mistaken.

And speaking of winning! Let's look at the Stock Market!!!!

You're pretty lucky not having a 401k. You guys with set pensions from blue-collar jobs better enjoy them. No one after you gets one.
