That was IMMEDIATELY after the shooting when it wasn't known that the shots were directed at Trump. It would have been irresponsible for a legitimate news outlet to call it an assassination attempt until more details came out.
People were railing against the NY Times about the same thing. Within a matter of minutes the headlines started appearing because it was determined to be an assassination attempt:

Same with the NY Times. The shooting happened at 6pm eastern time. I don't know what the cut-off is for print media, but they may probably either a) ran out of time to confirm what happened or b) were playing it safe since you can't edit print media once it's out there.
