“Here’s the thing: Once you give up the idea that we are all equal before the law and have the right to due process, you have given up the whole game. You have admitted the principle that some people have more rights than others. Once you have replaced the principle of equality before the law with the idea that some people have no rights, you have granted your approval to the idea of an authoritarian government. At that point, all you can do is to hope that the dictator and his henchmen overlook you.”

How does anyone respond to an inane, pointless, rant? Or was it a diatribe?
Jarod's post was NOT inane...and the thought expressed by whomever he was quoting was NOT inane either. It said something very important on several levels...and the fact that you were not able to see that...was one of the most important levels it spoke to.

The American right is asking for a dictatorship...and are willing to haves the dictator be a moronic asshole like Trump for some reason.

Too bad for our nation...that!

The problem for them is that one day they will be the target.

Yes, it is. Do people in France, England, Japan, get "due process?" Is having a pubic defender versus a team of top tier lawyers you hired, "equal before the law?" His rant is just that. It's empty rhetoric and nonsense. It hews closely to a homunculus fallacy in that he is really making a circular argument.

There is a difference between having an inexperienced attorney represent you in court and being denied going to court at all.

Do they--people in France, England, or Japan--get the same due process in the same way as in the US?

False equivalence. And, in fact, most of the time, no there's little or no difference. A public pretender will generally toss a plea deal at a defendant and tell--they'll use the term "advise"-- them to take it. So, that's pretty much being denied your day in court, and plea deals always come with strings that pretty much end any realistic possibility of an appeal.

Thoughts ^ as such mean little to the Red Hat Club, they really don’t give a rat’s ass about the Constitution, they profess they do, but in reality, as their support of Trump shitting on the Constitution proves, they don’t, so concepts as due process mean nothing to them

When those people become the target, then they will understand, but they somehow feel sure its only going to be the "Them".

Getting a public defender generally means you never get a day in court. You plea out before it even goes to discovery or a pre-trial hearing. After all, the public defender doesn't give a shit if you are found innocent or guilty. All they care about is getting your case over with ASAP to get paid and since they get paid a flat fee per case, the less time they have to spend on yours, the better it is for them.

Yes.

Distinctions without a difference when you're a white cop in front of a Democrat jury in Minneapolis, or any Democrat judge anywhere. Go watch some of those old Soviet 'trials' for how your party of criminals conducts 'trials'.

You can't blame your problem on Trump, anchovies.

Many have already been the targets of your filthy criminal pogroms. Quit whining about the precedents your PArty has set when it's their turn, the difference being your heroic traitors committed real crimes and treason.

So in other words your personal opinion of public defenders makes his statement a false equivalence?
