Trump: 'Nobody reads the bible more than me'

Does anyone actually believe that? I give him credit in that he's created a situation for himself where he can basically say anything, no matter how far fetched, and it doesn't hurt him. (so far at least)

I would bet all of my horses and everything else that is dear to me that he does not read the Bible more than once in a year, if that, let alone more than anybody else. If he did then he wouldn't do or say many of the things that he does and says.

Not for a minute lol. But I never believed Bill Clinton cracked a bible even though he made a point to be seen carrying one out of church. It's the same thing, Clinton was just more subtle about it.

Dear cawacko:

And yet ... Christagelical Evanjihadists will line up to support him. He has visited a number of 'Christian' colleges. Some such as Dordt in Sioux Center, truly ought to have known better.

Clearly not every Christian votes the same.

I think a lot of people make the mistake in thinking Christians support Trump because they think he's a Christian. But they apparently put national security, jobs and trade ahead of the usual social issues.

I guess that makes them lousy jihadists lol.

I honestly don't know what makes my brother-in-law support him, and my BIL is one of the most conservative Christians I know. I don't get how he can get past the vulgarity and lack of respect ... for anything or anyone. I'm left shrugging my shoulders.

By the time I was 9 I had read more Bible than Trump has even seen. I memorized more of it than he has read. I translated more of it in ASL than he will ever hear. He has in no way ever read that book in any meaningful sense.

All of that reading, translating, etc. may have been forced but if asked for a favorite verse, and if I was pretending to be superchristianman, I would actually be able to answer the question off the top of my head and without much, if any, hesitation.

I'd go so far as to bet that he doesn't even know what the John 3:16 signs mean and every kid that has spent more than 1 hour in Sunday school at any evangelical church knows that verse.

Dear JPP Reader:

My knowledge of the Bible comes from roughly two decades in a Presbyterian manse [parsonage]. The kids grew up with weekly table discussions of the meaning of the Hebrew/Greek text. I thought Dad would disown me the day I declared myself a socialist. We eventually reconciled, but by then, the damage was done. Without intending it, I acquired a theological education equal to many and better than most Bible-thumpers from the South.

Leaningright: I'd love to watch this brother-in-law's face should it reach his ears that ‘the Gospel’ is NOT Christ AND Caesar, but Christ NOT Caesar. Coerced to pick, methinks many would opt for Caesar. Of course this will meet a chorus of denials.

As for the perennial ‘Christian leader’ motif … well … a reasonably solid block of some 80+ million voters which requires virtually zero political expenditure – what partisan charlatan is going to ignore that?

One of the main differences between British and US politics is the voting public are turned off by conspicuous displays of religiosity by politicians.

One of the reasons people often cite for supporting him is that he, "Speaks the truth" and is not concerned with being politically correct....

Yet he makes statements like this that are clearly a lie and said for their politically correctness to anyone who can see.

Carrying a bible as a prop is not blatant lying.
