He held the rank of Command Sargent Major while serving...and then he retired. HE IS A RETIRED COMMAND SARGENT MAJOR...although his retirement pay is based on being a Master Sargent.

It is not unusual for individuals to be retired with retirement pay being at a lower rank than the highest rank they held.

He is a retired Command Sargent Major. He held that rank when he served...and he is retired.

His retirement pay is that of a retired Master Sargent.

What rank did Trump retire at?

He never completed the requirements to hold that rank. That is EXACTLY why the military would not allow him to retire at that rank. He is a retired Master Sargent NOT a retired Command Sargent Major. When he left the military he was a Master Sargent NOT a Command Sargent Major.
