Good sister, I am merely educating another member on the proper use of the word. In order to empathize one has to have gone through a similar experience. Since none of us here has gone through what those poor children went through, you cannot say you empathize. You can sympathize, but it takes much more active work to empathize.

Please do not fret good sister. It is a common mistake among the least educated among us.
