It's an interesting question. Slavery has been around through most, or all, of human history. It continues today in some parts of the world. Only in Western civilization did the notion that slavery was immoral and evil arise leading to its legal abolition. What if that didn't happen and slavery existed unabated to today?

It would not even be western civilization if there was still slavery.

The abolition of slavery did not happen in a vacuum. It evolved right along with western intellectual history and cultural history -- from the forays into natural law by the medieval Christian scholars, to the blossoming of egalitarianism and natural rights with the Enlightenment, to the tenets of equality and justice espoused in the liberal democratic tradition of the late 18th and early 19th century.

The incremental progress towards the abolition of slavery was inextricably bound with the development of western civilization.
 
automation made the need for slaves moot, hat tip to Eli Whitney. you could have left it legal and the market would simply dry up.
