When did a 20% tip become standard?

Tipping sucks. I like Japan where the business owners pay the employees enough that they don't have to grovel for tips.

Aggree BF. I don not like having to pay for the food and the help separately.
I do that at home, but it is different with my housekeeper/cook.

20% even if you suck is my standard. I make up for it by usually not tipping over 20% either. I think one time I went 25% to this cute waitress who also did a good job.

Canadian kid and fellow tight asses.
I worked for tips for 10yrs, and single kids like Canadian waited with no girl very long to get their drinks.

McDonalds story alert. I made a $2 tip at McD's just once. I told the manager about it and he said the actual policy is that you put tips in the register. I couldn't believe it so I said "Really?"
And he's like "The reason is that your till will usually come out a little short every shift, because you make mistakes but mistakes made in the customers favor they won't tell you. So any tips help balance that out."
I kept it anyway, screw that.

If you guys really want to help someone out, tip at the fast food places, they work faster and harder than regular restaurants and they get nothing for tips, while taking more disrespect.
