Oklahoma Doctor Refuses To Provide Rape Victim With Emergency Contraception
An Oklahoma emergency room doctor refused to provide emergency contraception to a 24-year-old female rape victim because the medication violated the health provider’s personal beliefs, a local CBS News affiliate reports. The hospital also denied the victim a rape kit, noting that it had no appropriate nurse on staff to administer the test.
“I will not give you emergency contraceptives because it goes against my beliefs,” the doctor allegedly told the rape victim and her mother, Rhonda. “She knew my daughter had just been raped. Her attitude was so judgmental and I felt that she was just judging my daughter,” Rhonda told the news station.
Emergency contraception’s effectiveness diminishes over time, and is most effective when taken immediately. Oklahoma law, however, shields providers from offering the perfectly legal medication under a “conscience clause” which could significantly hinder women’s access to contraception services. States across the nation have adopted similar restrictions and GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney has pledged to expand Bush-era rules permitting doctors to place their beliefs ahead of women’s health.
Fortunately, the young woman in Oklahoma ended up going to another hospital, where she received the medication she needed and the rape kit. But she would have had to go to two hospitals either way, since budget cuts have forced the state to resort to a system of rotating Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE nurses).

It's unbelievable. It's the exact same thing as a vegan taking a job at McDonalds and then refusing so serve hamburgers. Period.
And that's just wonderful that OK has slashed its services so deeply that they don't even have nurses and rape kits available for rape victims in their hospitals.
Another reason I live in NY and am not leaving.
Well, so what if they don't have enough nurses to serve the needs of slutty women.....
You know that's how they see that, right?
I'd hate to think that's a widely-held view, but among male conservatives living in Oklahoma...yeah I'm sure it's very common.
Not just Oklahoma. Consider the transvaginal ultrasound issue in Virginia - you know, the one they want *required* in order to have an abortion, even though there is absolutely no medical justification for it other than to induce shame in the mother.
I was hoping we'd get a few conservatives on this thread, explaining how the war on women is purely fiction....
Intelligent women will remember and vote accordingly...The issue in all elections is getting out the vote which is why they had to take out Acorn. Don't forget the slimy dude who hates women has a plan, yes Rove.
Under the Constitution, churches and other religious organizations have total freedom to preach that contraception is sinful and rail against Mr. Obama for making it more readily available. But the First Amendment is not a license for religious entities to impose their dogma on society through the law. The vast majority of Americans do not agree with the Roman Catholic Church's anti-contraception stance, including most American Catholic women.
The First Amendment also does not exempt religious entities or individuals claiming a sincere religious objection from neutral laws of general applicability, a category the new contraception rule plainly fits. [...]
And there was no violation of religious exercise to begin with. After religious groups protested, the administration put the burden on insurance companies to provide free contraceptive coverage to women who work for religiously affiliated employers like hospitals or universities -- with no employer involvement.
