Oklahoma Doctor Refuses To Provide Rape Victim With Emergency Contraception

An Oklahoma emergency room doctor refused to provide emergency contraception to a 24-year-old female rape victim because the medication violated the health provider’s personal beliefs, a local CBS News affiliate reports. The hospital also denied the victim a rape kit, noting that it had no appropriate nurse on staff to administer the test.

“I will not give you emergency contraceptives because it goes against my beliefs,” the doctor allegedly told the rape victim and her mother, Rhonda. “She knew my daughter had just been raped. Her attitude was so judgmental and I felt that she was just judging my daughter,” Rhonda told the news station.

Emergency contraception’s effectiveness diminishes over time, and is most effective when taken immediately. Oklahoma law, however, shields providers from offering the perfectly legal medication under a “conscience clause” which could significantly hinder women’s access to contraception services. States across the nation have adopted similar restrictions and GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney has pledged to expand Bush-era rules permitting doctors to place their beliefs ahead of women’s health.

Fortunately, the young woman in Oklahoma ended up going to another hospital, where she received the medication she needed and the rape kit. But she would have had to go to two hospitals either way, since budget cuts have forced the state to resort to a system of rotating Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE nurses).

It's unbelievable. It's the exact same thing as a vegan taking a job at McDonalds and then refusing so serve hamburgers. Period.

And that's just wonderful that OK has slashed its services so deeply that they don't even have nurses and rape kits available for rape victims in their hospitals.

Another reason I live in NY and am not leaving.

Well, so what if they don't have enough nurses to serve the needs of slutty women.....

You know that's how they see that, right?

I'd hate to think that's a widely-held view, but among male conservatives living in Oklahoma...yeah I'm sure it's very common.

Not just Oklahoma. Consider the transvaginal ultrasound issue in Virginia - you know, the one they want *required* in order to have an abortion, even though there is absolutely no medical justification for it other than to induce shame in the mother.

Take note, false equivalency connie cons. This is the "war on women."

Not Bill Maher calling someone a bad name on his show.

Oh yeah the state rape bill. We talked about that here. The Libertarians were up in arms over it!

haha, not really.

[SIZE=+1]Republicans:
We need to kill some spending to give the super-rich another tax cut.
Where to cut?
Let's cut funding for women's health.

They're so stupid, they'll vote for us no matter what we cut.

GOP Congressman: Women Who Undergo Abortions Should Face Criminal Charges

Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-FL) unwilling admitted to MSNBC’s Chris Matthews on Friday afternoon that he believed women who receive abortions should face criminal charges. “I think the punishment should certainly be very serious,” he said. “It should be more than a civil case. It should be something very serious”:

MATTHEWS: So it should be a criminal matter for the woman as well as the doctor?

STEARNS: I think so. You are killing an embryo and in some cases you are killing an embryo that is four or five months into gestation.

Stearns was appearing on the program to talk about the GOP’s recent effort to ban sex-selective abortions. That bill, the Prenatal Nondiscrimination Act or PRENDA, failed earlier this week and would have fined and imprisoned doctors who knowingly aborted fetuses based on racial or gender discrimination.

The congressman sought to defend the measure by arguing that “if all of Europe and most of Asia has this same rule, that you cannot have sex selection as an abortion, why can’t we in the united states pass the same bill?” But Matthews responded succinctly, saying, “it’s always amazing when you guys on the right want to import the values of other countries. Any time we do it, any time a liberal tries to do it, you say they’re bringing foreign values into this country.”

I was hoping we'd get a few conservatives on this thread, explaining how the war on women is purely fiction....

Intelligent women will remember and vote accordingly...The issue in all elections is getting out the vote which is why they had to take out Acorn. Don't forget the slimy dude who hates women has a plan, yes Rove.

Never happen. They'll assume we've 'forgotten' about this when we're on another thread and that's where they'll purport the 'war' exists only in the minds of liberals.

The slimy social retard whose only friends were other College Republican dweebs who also never got laid - yeah, he's still got a chip on his shoulder about women generally. This shit helps him 'heal'.

Yeah they care so much about children that we have the highest rate of children in poverty among first world countries...but we have a first rate military...that's why it's a war on women and their ability to be self determining and have access to health care...so they attack Planned Parenthood and support radical terrorists who 'appear' to act alone ...

Under the Constitution, churches and other religious organizations have total freedom to preach that contraception is sinful and rail against Mr. Obama for making it more readily available. But the First Amendment is not a license for religious entities to impose their dogma on society through the law. The vast majority of Americans do not agree with the Roman Catholic Church's anti-contraception stance, including most American Catholic women.

The First Amendment also does not exempt religious entities or individuals claiming a sincere religious objection from neutral laws of general applicability, a category the new contraception rule plainly fits. [...]

And there was no violation of religious exercise to begin with. After religious groups protested, the administration put the burden on insurance companies to provide free contraceptive coverage to women who work for religiously affiliated employers like hospitals or universities -- with no employer involvement.

Republicans care about children deeply until they're born. Then, not so much.
