Romney Supports Voter ID Laws That Could Disenfranchise 25% Of African-Americans

You honestly believe that 25% of African Americans cannot afford a free ID? What is wrong with you?

Over 750,000 in PA (not speaking about African Americans only) will be affected and below are some of the problems they may encounter. It's not just about a free ID, but also the problems in getting that ID. And those problems translate to spending money. And I still don't understand how this can be constitutional.

The election is 3 1/2 months away but given the hurdles to getting an approved ID -- including the fact that some of Pennsylvania's 67 counties either do not have driver's license centers or the centers are closed most days -- voting-rights advocates are trying to mobilize now...

Then there are the rural areas, with fewer voters but not as many organizers or state offices to help them...

PennDOT will issue IDs for free and search for Pennsylvania birth certificates, but outside of urban areas, the process is not that easy. Nine counties do not have driver's license centers and others, such as Fayette, have centers that are open only one day a week...

you sure post like Legion.....so tell me, what is it about "simple economics" that makes it likely 25% of blacks would be disenfranchised by requiring voter ID?.....even if most states didn't provide them free, are you saying 25% of blacks can't afford a $25 ID card?......

$25 ID card is the equivalent of a poll tax.

Requiering Any money to register to vote is called a "Poll tax" Poll taxes are by nature raceist. and they have be declared unconstitutional for a long time now.

requiring any money to keep and bear arms is also unconstitutional and by nature...racist, yet that doesn't stop the gov from extorting money from us anyway......with the support of morons like Darla and Apple of course.

So... none of these people can do the following...

Driver's license
Buy alcohol
Buy cigarettes
Apply for welfare
Apply for food stamps
Cash a check
Purchase a firearm
Open a bank account
Rent an apartment
Be admitted to a hospital
Get a marriage license

All of which require a photo ID... most of them require that photo ID to be government issued. So why not just get these 25% an ID. Get it done so that they can do all of the above and also strengthen the voting security. Year after year we hear about how hard it is to get these people ID's... let's just get it done. Obviously they are not working given that you need an ID to get a job these days. So they have the time. Now all we need is to get them the transportation. With the exception of rural areas, that shouldn't be hard given the public transportation available in most larger cities. Given that a majority of the poor live in inner cities, surely we can accomplish this.

how about sending trailers into neighborhoods when people are at home so they can get those mandated government voter ids at no charge

Whatever it takes, we have the technology to make them mobile. Help them get the ID as if they are that poor/immobile that they cannot either afford the cost or cannot get to a facility, then they are going to be in need of other government assistance such as welfare, food stamps, disability (via SS), SS etc...

If it is not a DL, then make the state issued ID 20-30 years without expiration. Then they just have to update if they change addresses.

My sons got jobs without photo IDs. They just had to fill out applications and provide SSNs.

I'm not sure where or when your sons got jobs. But employers (most anyway) require ID and SSNs to hire you. Its part of filling out the I-9 to prevent the business from getting in trouble for hiring illegal aliens.

I am a bit confused. The claim is that so many cannot afford a photo ID. So there is a significant portion of the population that cannot afford an ID, but does not receive any food stamps or gov't assistance (which require photo IDs)?

Sounds strange to me.

a social security card is not an acceptable id for voting, but ok for getting a minimum wage job

Actually, according to the requirements for filling out the required I-9 form, the SS card establishes eligibility for employment, but does not suffice as ID.

From: http://jobsearch.about.com/cs/backgroundcheck/a/background_2.htm

"Acceptable I-9 Documents

Employees are required to present either one of the documents from List A or one of the following documents from List B and one of the documents from List C.

List A (Documents that establish both identity and employment eligibility)
•United States Passport
•Permanent Resident Card or Alien Registration Receipt Card (I-551)
•Temporary Resident Card (I-688)
•Employment Authorization Document (I-766, I-688B, or I-688A)
•Foreign Passport with temporary I-551 stamp
•For aliens authorized to work only for a specific employer, foreign passport with Form I-94 authorizing employment with this employer

List B (Documents that establish identity only)
•Driver's license issued by a state or outlying possession
•ID card issued by a state or outlying possession
•Native American tribal document
•Canadian driver's license or ID card with a photograph (for Canadian aliens authorized to work only for a specific employer)
•School ID card with a photography
•Voter's registration card
•U.S. Military card or draft record
•Miltary dependent's ID Card

List C (Documents that establish employment eligibility only)
•Social Security account number card without employment restrictions
•Original or certified copy of a birth certificate with an official seal issued by a state or local government agency
•Certification of Birth Abroad
•US Citizen ID Card
•Native American tribal document
•Form I-94 authorizing employment with this employer (for aliens authorized to work only for a specific employer) "

what about people that got jobs before i-9 - or are retired

I believe employees who were working before the I-9 forms became mandatory still have to provide the same information. At least the company I work for required us to do so.

Retirees would be a trickier proposal. But if they are retired, what is the source of their income that does not require an ID to get or access?

Not if the states offer it for free to those that cannot afford it... just as PA is doing (as stated in your article link)

So they get a "free" card but have to pay $10 to get a certified copy of the birth certificate, and the costs/aggravation of going to a license center.

I still would like to know how anyone thinks this is constitutional.

They got jobs in PA and my younger got his just last fall.

Huh, I wonder why 65% of African Americans support the Florida law? You libs are so full of shit. You're just worried that without illegal aliens and dead people, Obama will lose...and you are probably correct in that assumption.
