Why are US athletes taxed on Olympic medal wins?

What a crock of shit. It's income. It should be taxed at the applicable rate for that persons income. Rubio is just a pandering right wing ideologue who views any form of taxation as a punishment as opposed as to contribution and obligation to build and maintain our nations infrastructure and government services. What an idiot (Rubio).

The UK which ordinarily takes will use any excuse to tax people treats winnings as tax free, so it just surprises me that the Land of the Free isn't, at least not in this case.

Well excuse me if I got that wrong but aren't potential presidents supposed to show a good example? Offshoring earned income to avoid tax is not a very good example to set for the poor bastards who are wage slaves.

The above is simply more of the same ignorance. Offshoring defers taxes, it does not avoid them. Funny that you want Mitt to show a 'good example' but don't hold our current President to the same standard. Obama is the one that says the 'rich' (like him) should pay more. Yet he, like Mitt, used the legal means he had available to him to minimize his taxes.

Also... Romney is the one that proposes reducing the amount of loopholes/deductions available to the rich. Obama wants to raise the income brackets. Assuming Romney would actually follow through (big assumption from any politician) then his would be the one that would actually have the greater effect on increasing the amount the wealthy pay. Raising the top marginal brackets does little if the bulk of the wealthy's earnings come from cap gains and qualified divs.

Of course and that it why Romney and his apologists are shitting themselves over this issue.

Who is 'shitting themselves'??? We are showing that you dolts don't know what you are talking about and that you are conflating the two issues. Calling Romney a tax fraud or claiming he did something wrong is moronic.

Being pissed at how the current tax code is structured is a completely separate issue. I hate the way it is structured, but my hating it doesn't mean Romney is evil for following it.

My problem is not that Mitt used every tool available to him to pay as little as legally possable. My problem is that those tools were available to Mitt in the first place and that Mitt promotes keeping the system that allowed him to pay a smaller effective tax rate than struggeling middle class families.
hey jarod. this might shock you just a bit, but YOU are partly responsible for those tools that Mitt and Barack have available to them.

Not in any cases. Gambling winnings, lottery winnings, any winnings are considered income and are taxable.

that's because 'they didn't win that'. they had help along the way, so the prize isn't all theirs.

You are assuming that he is 100% clean on this issue, there is only one way to find out! I think his missus gave the game away a little bit by saying that they give 10% of their earnings to the Mormon Church yet refused to answer any questions about his tax situation.

1) Yes, the IRS can tell us if he owes any money or has done anything illegal.

2) Most Mormons tithe 10%... what would that have to do with his tax records being 'bad'???

Again, I doubt he has done anything outright illegal, he is too smart for that or at least his battalion of tax lawyers are. However immoral, dubious, underhanded or even borderline dodgy, who knows. The point about his wife mentioning the 10% was she seemed to using that as a diversionary tactic, it just makes people even more suspicious. They are both pretty good at evasion though as evidenced by Romney refusing to answer Jon Stewart's question about whether he considered homosexuality to be a sin.

Again... people already know that Mormons tend to tithe 10%. There is nothing diversionary about that. Again, there is no difference between Obama using the tax code to his advantage and Romney doing the same. We all use the tax code to our advantage.

You just want to paint Romney as evil for doing so because he has more money than you. That is called jealousy.

If everybody knows about it then why did she mention it. As for his tax affairs, I have only your word that he is kosher and above board but I then suspect you would have vouched for Bernie Madoff.

What makes you think he's no Kosher?

I'm sure they'll write off a laundry list of expenses. I don't think the tax will amount to much, if anything.

and YET, you defended obama paying less taxes. you said all obama had to pay was what was legally required of him.

now....that the person is pub....your tune has changed.

I Have said again and again, its not that he might have done anything illegal that bothers me, its that he likely paid VERY little in taxes LEGALLY that bothers me. Because he is super rich, he was allowed to avoid his responsability.

yet you constantly defended obama by saying all he has to do is pay what is legally required.

the utter hypocrisy by the dems like jarod, bijou and dune is appalling.
