Guess what, genus, the base doesn't decided the outcome of a national election. The middle, the independents, the moderates... WE get to decide who is the next President.
I liked the Mitt Romney who was the governor of Massachusetts; he knew how to solve problems by working WITHIN the framework of the safety net traditions started by FDR. These safety net traditions began out of necessity. Americans believe in personal responsibility, but when we see our neighbors experiencing hard times, we know that could happen to anyone, anywhere. A factory closes not because the workers didn't manage the business correctly or because the workers WANTED their jobs moved off shore--and when a factory closes it effects the shops and stores that serve the factory workers. There, by the grace of God, go I. WE understand the notion of 'less fortunate'. WE know that everybody pays taxes. Everyone with a paycheck has federal withholding. WE understand that the marriage tax credit helps working families during the economic recovery, and we know that the "47% pay no tax" is a misleading talking point. (apparently the wealthy country club donors are not as smart as us independent voters).
Imagine the waiters, the catering staff at that event, working a second job to feed their kids or a part-time job to pay for textbooks. They had to hear that because they don't OWE any federal tax liability on April 15, they are a bunch of freeloaders.
Try to wrap your tiny head around this concept: It's not President Obama who is provoking class warfare. Mitt Romney telling half the people in this country that he doesn't care about them, he does't care about seniors, veterans, poor families, handicapped, or anyone who lost their job because of economic conditions beyond their control. Mitt Romney said these Americans don't matter because they don't make enough money to OWE a federal tax liability on April 15.
They have no skin in the game? Many have lost everything they had, and many seniors on a fixed income are only getting buy with help from their adult children.
Mitt Romney basically said that veterans returning from Afghanistan who don't already have a middle-income job are freeloaders not caring for themselves.
Mitt Romney basically said that lower income children are freeloaders because they are hungry at lunchtime.
Mitt Romney basically said that anyone not working and OWING a federal income tax liability on April 15 is not worth his time.
