They're having that debate in Oakland right now. The streets are flooded with illegal guns and crime is rampant. Some want to implement stop n' frisk. Others are fighting. Racism is the reason being used by those fighting it.

First you should be a cop. After that there needs to be reasonable cause. I don't really know why the employee suspected Whittaker but he had no right to frisk him.

Thats what I was thinking......so an employee made a mistake about the guy.....he wasn't shoplifting.....how tf is that racist ?
The article is a little sparse on details.

Making a mountain out of a molehill is an accurate discription of this incident....mistakes happen, even to white people.

And what possible connection does it have to some nut job racist yelling 'nigger' to an Afr. Amer. in a nightclub...?

and how does calling a cop change the situation? You are still singling a person out, you are bringing in an authority, you are impeding that person from going about their day, and you are having them wrongfully searched, except now it's all done by proxy. That doesn't solve anything or address the issue or make you supposedly any less racist, your solution isn't a solution at all.

I admit to being torn on this. I get the civil libertarian argument (or basic argument really) that just because one is young and black or hispanic living in a low income high crime black or hispanic area doesn't mean they should be randomly stopped for walking on the streets.

I'm also don't think street gangs should be able to dominate their neighborhoods to the point where regular law abiding citizens are afraid to come out of their house and kids can't play outside for fear of violence. I care a lot less about some punk gang members civil liberties than I do about the families forced to live in fear.

In this particular case in Oakland I hope they implement the stop n' frisk policies at least until it reaches a point where crime is more manageable and not off the charts like it is now.

You dont have any right to accost others. But this guy obviously did not see Whittaker putting anything in his pocket. And that's the problem. I don't really know why Whittaker submitted to it.
