At least 5 reportedly stabbed on Lone Star College campus

Why? So...you're saying it's in the Constitution that mentally unstable(or worse) are allowed to have fully automatic weapons?
unless they have had their right removed via due process, meaning they've been committed or imprisoned, then yes. they are allowed to have fully automatic weapons.

I'll agree with that for most firearms. Just not military grade tactical weapons. I think advanced weaponry needs advanced regulation. After all, your driver's license doesn't qualify you to drive an 18 wheeler or other commercial vehicles, does it?

It's also not a right, since the infernal combustion engine didn't exist in 1791, and so no one bothered to go, "yeah, that should be a right!" Now we're stuck with their severe lack of foresight.

And just what is voter ID? The incidences of voter fraud are so miniscule that it barely registers on the legitimacy meter...but here we are....forcing people to get ID's that they either have to pay out of pocket to attain, or spend money for transportation to get one. All because it affects our poorest the hardest....and they tend to vote Dem.

You see, the difference between you and I is that I have no problem registering my weapons. I have nothing to hide. I don't believe for an instant that the "commies" are coming to get us and we need to stand ready for some kind of armed rebellion. If.....on the million to one chance that were to happen? I'd be a dead man....as would you....and it wouldn't matter if you registered or not.
so many statist/collectivist arguments here, I don't know where to start. I do love the 'nothing to fear, nothing to hide' argument though, because it's been used for voter ID as well.

don't get me started on my right to drive vs. commercial driving.

Registration has been shown to do nothing but cost money and infringe upon the rights of law abiding people.

Kinda like that pesky voter registration thing, huh?

Makes sense. The total number of lawful gun owners in Canada must be somewhere in the neighborhood of three.

And the number of responsible gun owners in the US must be somewhere in the number of three.

It's not rational to make policies based on such a stupid assumption.

Actually, that's exactly why we need these policies. Every single one of the recent mass murders had obvious signs of mental illness, yet were allowed to purchase/use guns. They've been given a pass by the right, a pass that needs to be revoked through diligent background checks.

I legally owned a gun when I lived in Cannada, actually I had several... I did a lot of Moose hunting.

Ummm...what kind of background checks? Which state are you referring to? Do they check for mental illness, or just felony convictions?

It goes through the Federal database background check. I know for certain that it checks criminal, I am pretty sure the federal database also has mental.

I don't know of any state that does not do this.

Your homemade bomb argument is an irrelevant strawman. A tanker truck filled with gas could probably level a city block.

It is not a straw man, the point is that it is:

1) Easier to make than it is to buy a gun (it is also cheaper)
2) It can do far more damage than a gun

The tanker truck would certainly cause more damage... but obviously those aren't exactly easily accessible.

Like I said....I'm not big on gun bans....but I do support registration and more stringent background checks.

I also think that the state of our mental health system in this country sucks. I've seen studies that indicate that a large chunk of our homeless are the mentally ill. People who used to be treated in institutions. This is what privatization does...Reagan cut funding in the 80's and our homeless population exploded....States couldn't do it on their own....so they discharged them. Funny how there's never enough money to take care of the sick or infirm, but there's always enough money to build more prisons.

I agree we can do more in the mental health side. So many on the left like to point out that Reagan cut funding, which is true. I wonder why Clinton and Obama didn't increase funding... surely left leaning Presidents would take care of them after the evil Reagan kicked them out?

As for the prisons, we are in agreement. In my opinion, every non-violent drug offender should be released. Instead of incarceration, train them to help build infrastructure projects. Then hire them to build infrastructure projects, whether it be bridges, dams, roads etc...

Contrary to popular belief, the President doesn't have a magic wand to stick in the air and say, "Let it be done!"

Congress has denied or limited increased mental health screening and assistance funds since 2004 when Ron Paul took up his opposition. That's a shame. Looks like his son and grandson could use the help.
