It's part of the reason I'm so overt when discussing my socialism. People are so used to seeing liberals cower at the term "Marxist", so I embrace it. Left radicalism isn't a topic many of us have experience with, so putting it out there makes folks uncomfortable - which is good, in the long run.
I don't think that I'm so much a socialist, but a Capitalist that recognizes that a hybrid of a Capitalist base with a healthy dose of Socialist policies that protect the vast majority of the citizenry is the most logical system to use.
I mean, if we are going to be part of a global economy, that means our competition is the rest of the countries of the world. Almost every one of which has governmental policies such as health care and education up to and including college.
But we, on the other hand....force those costs onto the workforce out of pocket. Yes, conservatives.... I know that employers cover most of health care....but that's still wages that could be at least partially given to the worker if we had the policies in place....split 50/50?
Education is much the same...we force our kids to go 50k+ in debt before they even start their lives. Then if the needs of industry change, they are in all that debt and have nothing to show for it. We need a flexible system where the needs of industry are met without burdening people.
Why do we embrace this system?
1. Because for some reason....everything....including the Health of our citizens and the educating of our youth just HAS to be a "for profit" proposition.
2. Like it or not....putting people in debt and an employer based Health Care system serves a purpose. It puts people in a desperate situation. Desperation...be it student loan debt, the need for health insurance for our families...or both....makes for a workforce who has little power over their situation other than to go into MORE debt and hope that shit doesn't change again. This puts virtually all the power in the hands of the employer...and furthermore, is skewed towards conglomerates.
Of course, one could try to somehow find the capital ( good luck) to start a business of their own and pray to god that it doesn't fail before you start making a profit.
