You're 100% correct. At one time, The American Dream was to have gainful employment that paid enough money to own a home, raise a family, go on a vacation or two during the Summer and set the stage that your kids have a little bit better life than you did.
But somehow that old fashioned "white picket fence" dream has turned into "become as rich as you can, as fast as you can...and fuck everyone else".

I am not being obtuse. You are being overly simplistic. Of course I want control over my income. I fail to understand what victory you are seeking here by getting me to pull a number out of the air. And clearly, the greater my income, and therefore the greater my disposable income, the higher that percentage could go... But if, at the end of the day, given my current financial situation, if I had control over how I got to spend, say, 30% of my total income, and the other 70% was spent on programs that improved the overall standard of living, I'd have more than enough to do everything I wanted to do. Does that answer your question?

That answered the question. See it wasn't that hard. Of course I doubt the veracity of your claim, because right now you have the ability to have 70% of your income spent on programs that improved teh standard of living of others. You could voluntarily pay more in taxes, which I know you don't do or you could just give it away to charity, which I guess you don't do.
But, at least you answered the question.

Go get the quote from Learned Hand about paying more than your required share of income taxes. And I tithe to my church, even though I now live far away from it, and I give quite generously to charities at home and here in Mexico.
Which group had its tex exempt status withheld for 3 years? Was it ever subject to taxation?
I've often wondered how people I know are able to afford the lifestyle they live. Expensive homes, nanny's, vacations... One such couple works for the Government and I was often wondering if they were getting a great salary or if they had some other source of income. Well, their salaries were published a few years ago, because they were subject to a Freedom of Information Act request... I can tell you they are not living the lifestyle as a result of their income!
My newest theory is inheritance. Which is unfair, because I work MUCH harder, take MUCH more risk and don't live anywhere close to the life style they do.

Actually, that is quite incorrect. I am very satisfied where I am at right now financially. I have given up many opportunities for advancement and more money because the subsequent sacrifice with regards to my family just wasn't worth it.
Now, I believe that people should be free to earn whatever they want as long as they are breaking no laws. You don't believe that. You call others "greedy" and "immoral" because they make more money than you and you are quite frankly jealous.
You lefties are obsessed with money. It is all you talk about. I don't ever see right wingers on this site talk about how much they earn. They don't need to. All of our conversations are about political philosophy and generalized terms. People like you and Topspin feel it necessary to talk about what you make. You lefties are always concerning yourself with what others earn and what they should be allowed to keep or what you think "enough is". You are obsessed with it. Maybe you are dissatisfied with how your lives have turned out and you want others to be as miserable as you. Who knows, but it is clear you are obsessed with money

So do you think we should make everyones salary publicly available? That way you can extend your resentments to everyone and not just your neighbors?
You should not be required to listen to anyone talk about anything you don't want to hear. People should be free to disclose anything they want to disclose. Personally, I believe that being open and honest about Sex makes it safer, less problematic, and better for everyone. If its kept secret, people are more easily shamed.

The only way that I'm "obsessed" about money is in the big picture. We need to stop marginalizing the workforce and deifying the Conglomerate. I'm not saying that they don't deserve to be rich...but not at the expense of the rest of the nation.
Its not about jealousy, its about fairness. Our system is set up to perpetuate a fraud, the myth that working hard will get you that lifestyle is BULLSHIT, and the sooner that is common knowledge the better. Many people with an affluent lifestyle strut around suggesting that they are better and worked harder than those without that lifestyle, when very often those people were given that ability due to no attributes of there own.
I don't envy it, I simply label it as unfair. You see, I can think something is unfair without being envious of it.
