I was out buying a few items for Festivus this weekend.
In one store they had a guard at the exit, after the cash register who was stopping customers to compare the receipt with the items in the cart. A long line developed so I skipped it and walked out with the items I had paid for. This really upset the store security department who had two goons try to stop me as I walked to my car and drove away. Why would any idiot wait in a 20 min line to prove he bought the items that were already his? Why did the store think they had a right to prevent me from leaving?
In a book store the security system that beeps as you walk out if they detect an item whose tag has not been removed was clearly broken. It was beeping as each customer walked out. People were freaking out, returning to the store and going through their bags to prove to an employee they were not stealing. Some of us just kept going, but I was surprised by those who returned.
Are American consumers so cowed and beaten down by police that we are afraid to go about our business when we have done nothing wrong?
